Advice and feedback from an artist, for the artists!

Q: What was your knowledge of tagging before starting with TeePublic?

A: I knew tagging was important, but my knowledge on how to use to its fullest potential eluded me. I mainly learnt from watching how other people on places such as twitter or Instagram tag their work and try to copy that. It helped somewhat but being taught the actual method of tagging made a huge difference.

Q: Have you watched our Tagging 101 video and what information did you gather from it?

A: I found the tagging video extremely useful and I recommend anyone uploading to Teepuplic to watch it a couple of times. One of the best tips I got from it was to keep away from using a slightly different version of the same word, such as dog, dogs, that sort of thing.

"Not Dead Yet" by Dustbunny Studios

Q: In your opinion, how has tagging impacted your sales on TeePublic?

A: I've used other ready-made merch sites in the past with no success, and that can be pretty hard on any creator, as it makes you feel your work is just not good enough for a wider audience. Turns out, tagging your work the right way can help immensely!  I started using Teepublic and really making an effort with the tagging system and I've found so much more success than I had before.

Q: How much time do you put into tagging each design?

A: Besides drawing the actual design, I think I put the most effort into the tagging. It certainly has gotten easier now as I've figured out what brand I'm going with on my store, and what has worked for the previous design of similar aesthetic. Still, there's always room to experiment and learn more!

Q: Do you have a specific design that you were having trouble tagging? How did you figure out the right tags?

A: I have an original brand mascot, called Dustbunnies which I've drawn since I was a young teen. Because they're unique to me, trying to figure out how to tag them beyond just, "Cute" was pretty tough. Thankfully Teepublic has some lovely and helpful staff who reached out to me and help me pick the best tags for my Dustbunnies.

"Love" by Dustbunny Studios

Q: What are some of your most commonly used tags for your designs?

A: The main aesthetics on my store is Dungeons & Dragons related designs, skulls and, of course, Dustbunnies. A strange mix, but at the end of the day, you just gonna be you! The tag I've used pretty often, have been "DnD", "Roleplay", "Skull" "D20", for dustbunny designs it's been "Kawaii" "Anime" "Cute animal art."

Q: Do you have a holiday plan to review your tags? If so, any tips/pointers you're willing to share?

A: No solid plans as of yet, but it's certainly a good idea. Words, slang, memes and the meaning behind them change all the time, so it only reasonable that tags need to be updated and changed over time too!  I think the best tip I can give is to research. Use the tagging system on the website and see what pop-ups. If it looks like your work suits, then try using that tag in the future.
