Neo meaning New and Lithic meaning Stone

Inspired by the Running Horned Woman prehistoric art from Algeria combined with images and beings I encountered in spirit journeys.

I took this photograph on a stormy day at a time when the rain had abated. The road we were on took us past this iconic landmark on the Wiltshire Plains, so we stopped. Today, Stonehenge is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it's so old people really don't know why it was built. Sun worship is the popular thought and who is to say that is wrong? Certainly, the alignment of the stones seems to indicate an association with the Sun at the time of the summer solstice, but nobody really knows. What they do know is that some of the stones were probably brought there from south Wales; it's the closest known place in the UK where such stone exists. Much of the folklore that surrounds Stonehenge reflects a connection with the sky

The Columbian Mammoth is an extinct animal that inhabited warmer regions of North America during the Pleistocene. Here, three approach over a grassy slope with distant, snow capped mountains behind them. The Columbian Mammoth is a bit less popular than it's cousin the woolly mammoth. It's not known though if it was a furry or if it was more hairless like a modern elephant. It inhabited warmer regions. In fact, bones have been found in Georgia not too far from where I live. The forty-sixth symbol is a Neolithic Earth Goddess, according to the assumptions of the archaeologists. The background was painted loosely in blue and green to create a connection to the Earth and textured with water droplets.

Nobody knows exactly what the spiral meant in the beginning, but some suggestions have been evolution, revolution, awareness of the one within the context of the whole, connectivity and union. For the background, I used a wet on wet technique again, and then dropped and splattered the same color.

Cairnpapple Hill is one of the most important prehistoric sites on mainland Scotland. Here you can see a 1949 reconstruction of a 4000 year old burial site and a 1990s communications tower, the very old and the very new. The archaeology on the main site here spans a remarkable period of some 4000 years of activity, from about 3500 BC through to c.500 AD, with its major features being a Neolithic henge and circle, followed by a series of three Bronze Age cairns with cist burials, and a Late Iron Age cemetery. Cairnpapple was used from about 3,000 BC to 1400 BC firstly as a ceremonial site then several centuries later as a burial site. 5000 years ago, or around 3000BC, our Neolithic ancestors built a henge here.

I drew this shell I found on a trip, because I think the spiral is the perfect symbol of a trip too. In mathematics, a spiral is a curve emanating from a point, moving farther away as it revolves around the point (a journey described in numbers). In nature this pattern repeats in everything from sunflowers and fingerprints to DNA and galaxies. As a symbol it appears in every world religion and culture since at least Neolithic times (what a trip the spiral symbol is having!).

The view of Blencathra as seen from the Castlerigg Stone Circle in monochrome. Blencathra sits in the northernmost fells of Cumbria's Lake District within the Skiddaw range. It has all of six summits, the highest being Hallifell Top reaching 2848ft (868m) above sea level. Thge stones in the foreground are part of the Castlerigg stone circle which is high above the town of Keswick. This is a neolithic circle dating from about 3000BC and is one of the oldest in Britain.
