This Pennsylvania-based performance legend started out as a maker of motor mounts for engine swaps and floor-shifters back in 1958, but they steadily expanded their product line through the 1960s. Hurst wheels, Line/Loc, and Swifter Shifter gloves were developed among other items, and later, Airheart Brakes and the Schiefer Manufacturing Company, which made clutches and other driveline components, were acquired. Hurst Performance floor-shifters were skillfully engineered, reliable and stirring in appearance, plus, their marketing was in tune with the times, catering to the flourishing muscle car movement of the 1960s. Their shifters infiltrated the drag racing, stock car racing, off-road racing and many other areas of motorsports.

In late 1987, rumors of an all-new, high performance Corvette built upon the fourth generation platform began circulating among the automotive press. Dubbed the “King of the Hill,” the secretive supercar was said to be a world-beater, and in March of 1989, GM debuted its impressive Corvette ZR-1 at the Geneva Motor Show. 1990 marks the 25th anniversary of the ZR-1’s market debut, and while a mere 6,939 were ever built, the car remains a memorable piece of Corvette history, as well as a bridge from performance Corvettes past to the present.

Founded in 1922, Grant Performance Products consisted of everything from engine overhaul kits, piston rings, valve spring inserts, ignition systems, and safety helmets, but their single biggest hit came in 1962 when they introduced their custom steering wheels for dune buggies which later expanded to include models for the wider range of the general automotive aftermarket.

The Fiat 124 Sport Spider is a convertible sports car marketed by Fiat for model years 1966-1985. Designed by and manufactured at the Italian carrozzeria Pininfarina factory, the monocoque, front-engine, rear drive Sport Spider debuted at the November 1966 Turin Auto Show with styling by Tom Tjaarda. Fiat later marketed the car as the Spider 2000 (1979-1982). After being retired by FIAT, Pininfarina continued the production of the model under his own brand as Pininfarina Spider Azzura for the North American market and Pininfarina Spidereuropa for the European market for three more years, from August 1982 until 1985.

Tom Hoover, whose work at Chrysler included development of the legendary Max Wedge and 426 Hemi V-8 engines, the 1970 Plymouth AAR ’Cuda, and the 1978 Dodge Li’l Red Express truck, is best known as the “Father of the Hemi.” Hoover trained as a physicist at Juniata College in his hometown of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He received his master’s degree from Penn State and later earned a master’s degree in automotive engineering from the University of Michigan while working for Chrysler. Tom led the team that designed the mighty 426 Hemi that was so powerful and so successful, that it lead to NASCAR changing their rules to attempt to eliminate it from competition.
