In World War 2, the Germans used a scrambling system called Enigma. This machine simulates a number of Enigma machines to do a brute force attack on the 456,976 solutions of a single order of the four Enigma encoding wheels. This attack took about 20 minutes. Other machines were tasked with the other wheel orders.
