What is now known as "STP" was invented by German scientists during WWII as a response to Germany's need for lubrication of the German war-machine vehicles. WWII US Army divisions in Africa that overtook German Afrika Korps vehicles alleged that the Germans employed an engine oil that is now known as STP formulation full-strength in their air-cooled 4-cylinder engines, which successfully traveled through the hot African Desert war-front without seizing due to friction and extreme heat. How the Germans' original chemical synthesis formulation found its way to the U.S. after WWII is not known, but most likely it made that journey along with many of the other German innovations through the distribution of technology through the spoils of war.

This Pennsylvania-based performance legend started out as a maker of motor mounts for engine swaps and floor-shifters back in 1958, but they steadily expanded their product line through the 1960s. Hurst wheels, Line/Loc, and Swifter Shifter gloves were developed among other items, and later, Airheart Brakes and the Schiefer Manufacturing Company, which made clutches and other driveline components, were acquired. Hurst Performance floor-shifters were skillfully engineered, reliable and stirring in appearance, plus, their marketing was in tune with the times, catering to the flourishing muscle car movement of the 1960s. Their shifters infiltrated the drag racing, stock car racing, off-road racing and many other areas of motorsports.

North Wilkesboro Speedway is a short oval racetrack located on Route 421, 80 miles north of Charlotte. The speedway opened its doors on May 18, 1947, as a dirt track with the first official event promoted as a modified race.

North Wilkesboro Speedway is a short oval racetrack located on Route 421, 80 miles north of Charlotte. The speedway opened its doors on May 18, 1947, as a dirt track with the first official event promoted as a modified race, including heat races and a feature event. While an attendance of about 3,000 people was expected, a crowd in excess of 10,000 showed up to see one of the famous Flock brothers compete (and ultimately win the race). The track is just 5/8 of a mile around and features a unique uphill backstretch and downhill frontstretch that played into it's reputation as one of the fastest short-tracks of the '40s and '50s. The original dirt oval was paved in 1957 and continued to operate until the track's closure in 1996.

Talladega Nights

Super Stock & Drag Illustrated was founded by John "Monk" Reynolds, publisher of Eastern Drag News and owner of Pennsylvania's US30 drag strip. The first issue was November 1964 and the magazine published continuously until June 1996 when it was re-titled 'Drag Racing' and only made it a few more years until a final issue in March 1999. The magazine was a thoughtful mix of drag racing coverage, tech articles, and street machines, which gave it pretty diverse appeal to gear heads of all sorts.

One of the most successful rally cars ever. Legendary Finn, Tommi Makkinen piloted the team's works car and clinched the driver's title for a record four years in a row from 1996 to 1999. The car was known for its extreme agility and high speed dynamics. Tommi was unstoppable in this car.

Westboro Speedway was built by five World War II vets on 35 acres of former farmland in Westborough, Massachusetts. The track started out hosting midget racing, but eventually full size stock car racing became the track's primary focus. In addition to motorsports, Westboro Speedway also hosted countless rock concerts over the years. Like most racetracks, what was once a rural location was eventually surrounded by suburban sprawl that didn't take kindly to the raucous activities that went on there. That, coupled with the land being worth more to developers saw the track close its doors for good in 1985.

Back in the '30s, Phil Weiand didn’t have technology to assist him in finding customers for his performance intake manifolds. He did, however, have a bit of marketing savvy. Late at night, he’d go where the Los Angeles street racers gathered to set up their matches, scout out the losers of those matches, and ask them if they wanted to go faster, promising that his dual-carb manifolds would help them do exactly that. He delivered the goods and the rest is as they say, hot rod history.

Riverside International Raceway (sometimes known as Riverside, RIR, or Riverside Raceway) was a motorsports race track and road course established in the Edgemont area of Riverside County, California, just east of the city limits of Riverside and 50 miles east of Los Angeles, in 1957. In 1984, the raceway became part of the newly incorporated city of Moreno Valley. Riverside was noted for its hot, dusty environment and for being a somewhat complicated and dangerous track for drivers, but was also considered one of the finest tracks in America. The track was in operation from September 22, 1957, to July 2, 1989.
