Launched on the big screen in 1977, Smokey and the Bandit revolves around two bootleggers as they attempt to illegally transport 400 cases of beer from Texarkana to Atlanta. Despite the cult status it enjoys today, initial box office performance was rather poor, though it went on to gross $126.7 million in North America which isn't bad on the film's paltry $4.3 million budget. It actually ended up picking up steam thanks to word of mouth and was the second-highest-grossing movie of 1977 after some random space opera flick ;) Of course, Smokey and the Bandit may be best known for the Pontiac Trans Am that was the star throughout the film in just about every major scene.
