“We all change when you think about it. We're all different all through our lives. And that's okay, that's good. You've got to keeping moving. As long as you remember all the people that you used to be. I will not forget one line of this, not one day. I swear. I will always remember when the Doctor was me.” I came up with this idea shortly before the premiere of the Series 8 and the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi. I wanted to honor all the regenerations in one painting. It's one of my largest - 48" x 24". The concept of a regenerating lead character is what makes Doctor Who so special. When Doctor Who returned to the television in 2005, we learned that the Doctor was the last time lord. At some point between the 8th Doctor and the 9th Doctor, the time war occurred. The time war was waged primarily between the Time Lords and the Daleks, both of which wanted to destroy the universe. The Doctor alludes to the fact that he destroyed his own people and the Daleks to save the universe. This little plot device, which was only alluded to once the new series was launched, provided key character attributes, which I believe played a significant role in the show's success - the Doctor was alone, the last of his kind, and it was the result of his own actions. David Tennant wasn't the first Scottish actor to be the Doctor. And Peter Capaldi wasn't the first Scot to play the role with a Scottish accent. These honors go to Sylvester McCoy. He was the Doctor from 1987 to the shows cancellation in 1989 after 26 seasons, though technically he was the Doctor until 1996 when he appeared briefly at the beginning of the Doctor Who TV movie before regenerating into the 8th Doctor, Paul McGann. As I've argued before, the cancellation shouldn't be blamed on the 7th Doctor. He was brought in only after the ship already hit the iceberg, so to speak.
