Founded in Los Angeles in 1937, Earl Scheib specialized in low cost repainting and collision repair of automobiles the company grew quickly following World War II and by 1975 had locations throughout the US as well as branches in Germany and England, all company-owned, with Scheib manufacturing his own paint through a wholly owned subsidiary. While Earl Scheib originally had a reputation for less than stellar work, as the company struggled in later years and shops began closing as others became independent businesses, the quality got considerably better and the low-ball pricing scheme became secondary to decent work at most of them.
