When travelling in the Mekong Delta, our driver took a detour to show us the Cai Dao temple in the town of Long Xuyen. The temple was nearing the completion of a renovation, but the people there allowed us to see inside. The worshippers there follow Caidaoism, a monotheist religion that promotes the idea that all religions are one. Caidaoism is a new religion, having been founded in 1926, in Vietnam, but now has a growing worldwide following. While not prominent, within the temple were iconic references to Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. Spiritualism is deep in the Caidaoism culture. The Angkor Archaeological Park,near Siem Reap, Cambodia, is home to many temples and other structures. This image is of the Banteay Kdei temple, a Buddhist temple that dates back to 12th century. When capturing this image, I was really drawn to the weathering on the sandstone and the resulting wonderful warm tones.

This is an image of just a few of the many, ninety-one, stupas (chedis) within the Wat Pho temple complex. These stupas are incredibly ornate with porcelain pieces embedded around their surfaces in very intricate patterns, each of which is topped by a small spire. I understand that at their simplest, stupas are a simple earthen mound that is faced with stones, but these take the art form to a new level. They are stunning.

You need to get there early to see Angkor Wat at its best. The early morning light brings tranquility to this remarkably peaceful place. Of course, you are not alone. Angkor Wat is the biggest tourist attraction in Cambodia, it even appears on the national flag. But the place is so enormous that finding a spot without tourists is not difficult. The temple was originally dedicated to the Indian god, Vishnu, but became a Buddhist temple within a hundred years of its construction, which started during the early 12th century. This image is the view along the southern gallery of the first inner wall.

On the southern edge of Attica, on a beautiful location, in Cape Sounion, you can see one of the most impressive ancient temples of Greece (approx. 440 B.C.), the one dedicated to Poseidon, the moody and usually angry, God of Sea, in the Greek Mythology. This is the place where, Aegeus, king of Athens, jumped off the cliff and died, when he saw his son's (Theseus) ship returning with black sails (a sign that his son had died in his battle with Minotaur, allthough it was not true), giving name to the Aegean Sea. There is a reference of Sounio, in one of the poems ("Don Juan")by famous romantic poet, Lord Byron. "Place me on Sunium's marbled steep, Where nothing, save the waves and I, May hear our mutual murmurs sweep..."

So what is this? The image depicts just one of the many, many screens that line the galleries surrounding the tiers in Angkor Wat. The screens allow light to enter the galleries during the day. These screens are essentially identical, the only real difference being whether they were intact or not. In some of the screens, one or more of the pillars were missing, but this one is intact. The pillars in each screen must have been turned on a lathe in order to create such perfectly formed spindles, both within each screen and from screen to screen. It is remarkable that such delicate structures could have survived for nine hundred years. Angkor Wat is not just a remarkable tourist destination, it is an architectural wonder.
