Aotearoa Posters and Art Prints

Winding down a second totally accidental ski season in Otago. I didn't ride as much this year as I was distracted by hiking, but a couple of fresh dumps in spring got me all fired up! Chur for the good time Cardies!

A quick painting as the sun was setting on Blue Lake, Rotorua. Painting this late in the day is always tricky as the light changes so fast. I was visited by ducklings

Painting is great for killing time. I had two hours to wait for friends to collect me from the bus station. Time to crack out the paints!

Three hours on from Welcome Flat Huts, you can find Douglas Rock Hut. The trail isn't maintained so it's a hell of an adventure. Crossing rovers, streams, fresh slips and landslides. Slightly further up the valley we found huge tracks of avalanche debris, freshly coming down the valley with the arrival of spring. I'd love to get back up to that wild remote valley!

Liverpool Hut has been on my tramping list for a while but I've also been intimidated by the sharp steep uphill at the end. I thought I'd be dangling off a cliff! Luckily it was actually pretty safe and I had a great time!

The flightless takahē is a unique bird, a conservation icon and a survivor.

Last November two friends and I went to New Zealand. One day while on the road looking for somewhere to eat, we ended up in the small town of Tirau. The first thing we noticed about this place was all the corrugated iron artworks around; there were signs, figures, sculptures, even whole buildings in the shape of a dog and sheep made of this material you would normally see only used in roofing. One of the figures that stood out to me the most was this fancy lady pukeko perched on top of a jewelry and clothes shop, so I had to draw her!

Painted on a stormy day in Palmy. Half way through this painting it poured with rain so I hid under a tree for thirty minutes. Then went back to finish the job.

A Promarker illustration of Queenstown Clocktower. When I first arrived in Queenstown I lost my wallet for three days so by the time someone handed it in (thanks friendly locals!) I'd had plenty of time to get to know the town inside out. I was very familiar with this clocktower after three trips to collect emergency travel money!!

Kaikoura Watercolour

My 35th Birthday was full of surprises. One of which being that we made it Routeburn Falls hut early enough to poke around a bike further. The snow conditions were safe so we made it all the way to Harris Saddle by sunset! I ate a terrible chicken pasty in this shelter.

Ferns On Black

The Māori people were the original settlers of Aotearoa (New Zealand). Their culture and history is rich and beautiful, and to this day is an important part of New Zealand's culture. Their legends around the creation of the world and this beautiful land have always captured my imagination. A Hei Matau is a bone or greenstone depiction of the Hook of Maui. Māori legend holds that the North Island of New Zealand was once a huge fish that was caught by the great mariner Maui using only a woven line and a bone hook. Legend holds that the shape of Hawke Bay is that of the hei matau, which caught in the fish's side. For the Māori, the hei matau is taonga (a cultural treasure). Painted on the first day of my fourth lockdown! The Remarkables always lives up to it's name. It's characteristic ridges and North/South facing direction makes this range like no other. It's also super hard to paint and I'm finally happy with one!

The biggest ethnic polynesian city in the world! It is also known as the "City of Sails" for it's multiple beautiful natural harbours perfect for sailing.

My second time hiking up to Brow Peak. This time the weather was terrible until we turned back along the ridge towards Big Hill Saddle. The skies cleared and I was totally gobsmacked by Otago's rolling tussock!

An impromptu photography walk around Arrowtown found me walking Sawpit Gully. The Autumn colours are incredible!
