Post World War II returning GI’s brought back images of the Pacific Islands and the fascination with Tiki emerged. By the 1960s Tiki could be seen everywhere. It adorned buildings, restaurants, motels and all manner of advertising. Exports of authentic Tiki could not keep up with the demand.

Being fond of mid 20th Century Tiki culture it was just a matter of time before I created a Tiki artwork. I have different things I want to do with this digitally with backgrounds so although the main subject is finished, this is only the start of the things I want to do.

First opening their doors in 1999, Burt's Tiki Lounge combined a dark, moody vibe with a serious bric-a-brac fetish, eclectic live music, and tropical drinks to create a bizarre oasis in Albuquerque‎, New Mexico. Countless acts performed at Burt's and it even made a couple of appearances on Breaking Bad. It was a true southwestern original with few contemporaries, but sadly, Burt's folded after 17 years not too long after moving to a new location which failed to capture the beloved dive bar tiki vibe of the original.
