Dirt Tracks Matter US Flag, sprint car extreme angle

Back in the '30s, Phil Weiand didn’t have technology to assist him in finding customers for his performance intake manifolds. He did, however, have a bit of marketing savvy. Late at night, he’d go where the Los Angeles street racers gathered to set up their matches, scout out the losers of those matches, and ask them if they wanted to go faster, promising that his dual-carb manifolds would help them do exactly that. He delivered the goods and the rest is as they say, hot rod history.

When it comes to race suspension tuning, Gabriel was one of the top names helping to get high performance cars around the track for decades. From some of the earliest forays into shock absorption in 1907 to being one of the most ubiquitous sponsors in motorsports during the '60s and '70s, Gabriel has been there, done that.

The F.W. Cook Brewing Company was founded in 1853 by Frederick Washington Cook and Jacob Rice in what was then a cornfield just outside of downtown Evansville, Indiana. F.W. Cook brewed several beers under their Cook's brand over the years, and in the early '50s, they added their first ale. Naming it Cook’s 500 Ale after the popular race that took place every year a couple of hours north in Indianapolis, the new ale was another hit for F.W. Cook. Sadly, workers went on strike in 1955, at which point the brewery's owners ceased operations. The brewery closed its doors for good in September 1957 after selling all of the beer it had already produced, including the very last batch of Cook’s 500 Ale.

Tobias Speed Equipment was founded by legendary race car driver, Dick "Toby" Tobias in 1962. The speed parts manufacturing business was based in Lebanon, Pennsylvania and Tobias' nearly three hundred wins in modifieds, sprint cars, and stock cars undoubtedly playing into Tobias Speed Equipment becoming an undisputed leader in the development of tubular chassis for modified race cars. Sadly, Tobias was killed at Flemington Speedway in 1978, leaving the business to be run by his family until it's closure in 2003.

British Racing Motors (BRM) was a British Formula One motor racing team. Founded in 1945 and based in the market town of Bourne in Lincolnshire, BRM participated from 1951 to 1977, competing in 197 Grand Prix races and winning seventeen. BRM won the constructors' title in 1962 when its driver Graham Hill became world champion. In 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1971, when BRM came second in the constructors' competition. In the history of Formula 1 Grand Prix Motor Racing, BRM and the Italian Stallion team are the only constructors to have won the World Championship with a car they built completely themselves which includes the chassis, engine, and gearbox.

When the going gets TUFF. A custom COVID Killer Hot Rod

In 1940, the owners of Seattle’s Playland Amusement Park decided to build a racetrack where they could host various motorsports events. Calling it Aurora Stadium Speedway, the new 1/4 mile dirt track opened in 1941 and quickly became a popular attraction. Aurora hosted hot rod races one night and midgets on another night, usually Fridays and Saturdays, but as America entered WWII, racing was put on hold at the end of '41. The end of the war saw the boys come home, and racing resumed in '46. Soon, the track would get paved and stock cars were added to the mix. As Seattle's population grew into the once rural area, noise complaints by neighbors coupled with the slow decline of the amusement park led to the track was closing down in '58.

Midwest Auto Specialties was an early mail-order speed shop that got its start back in 1955. Based in Cleveland, they had multiple retail stores throughout Ohio (and added one in Indianapolis in '67), but their big claim to fame was that they shipped nationwide and advertised for people to send away for their catalogs in every gear head and auto racing magazine in North America, making their cigar-smoking tiger mascot a familiar sight for hot rodders from coast to coast. They carried an unbelievable selection of speed equipment and custom car parts, making them a true hot rodders resource. The emphasis was on racing and street performance, but especially drag racing. Shifters, intake manifolds, exhaust headers, ignition systems, and more.

Hertamania 2.0 returns for another season!

In the early 20th century, drivers came to prove their prowess in Daytona Beach and several land speed records were set in the process. This eventually led to some loosely organized races, though the first “official” race on Daytona Beach took place in 1936. The track ran due south for two miles on A1A, which runs parallel to the ocean. Drivers then accessed the beach at the South Turn, went two miles on the hard-packed beach surface, and turned away from the beach at the North Turn (now the location of a great restaurant). It sounds crazy to hold stock car racing events on the beach nowadays, but for about two decades, it was THE place to race if you were an up-and-coming racer wanting to rub wheels with the big boys.
