Hills Department Store - Famous for Low Prices Every Day!

Where shopping is always a pleasure. Caldor Inc., launched in 1951, was a leading retailer of upscale discount goods in the northeastern US. Caldor expanded rapidly beginning in the early 1980s to become the fifth largest discount chain in the nation by the early 1990s. The company sold nearly $2.5 billion worth of goods and employed a work force of more than 20,000 in 1994. A discount industry pioneer, Caldor predates the start of both Kmart and Wal-Mart by more than a decade. Despite its successes, Caldor suffered from financial issues in its later years and the company was liquidated in 1999.

Everyone had a favorite record store growing up and if you were in the greater Columbus area in Ohio, that store was without a doubt Buzzard's Nest Records. They weren't just a great record store that stocked all kinds of music, but an early example of going well beyond music with a large selection of posters, stickers, patches, shirts, and a little bit of everything a teen might need to trick out their room.

Peaches Records & Tapes was a Los Angeles-based chain of record superstores, some as large as 15,000 square feet. They were known for its vast selection, with many locations in buildings the size of a typical grocery store, reportedly stocking $500,000 in inventory. Peaches were also known for in-store events with bands and artists, huge murals of the latest album covers on the side of its buildings and for selling records from fruit-crates. The first store opened on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles in 1975 and later that year, a second was opened in Atlanta. At its peak, Peaches had 50 stores in 22 cities with over 2,000 employees. In June 1981, Peaches filed a petition for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 citing $20 million in debt.

Centennial Liquor Store was one of Austin's longest continuously operating retail businesses and a local favorite as a result. Aside from being the go-to spot for liquor, beer, and wine in town, most people will know it from its appearance in the 1993 film, Dazed and Confused. in the movie, it shows up after Melvin asks if Mitch can “run over to the Centennial over there and pick me up a sixer.” Mitch proceeds to play it cool while buying beer at the liquor store across from the Emporium. Of course, that was the movie version of things as the actual Centennial liquor store was located at 6534 N Lamar Blvd and not across the street from the Emporium, but it has since been demolished.
