I thought I was viewing a movie set while exploring the backroads of Prince Edward Island. Gillis' Drive In Restaurant is one of the last car hops service in Canada. It is located in the community of Montague, within the Town of Three Rivers, Kings County PEI. It had a lot of character and a great opportunity to create a story of nostalgia. Unfortunately at the time, there were a lot of modern day cars parked that didn't fit the theme of what I wanted to capture. What to do? So I returned the next day before daybreak and yes the lot was empty! However the sun coming up directly behind and silhouetting the drive-in itself! This wasn't working! I discovered this small school house while exploring the backroads of Prince Edward Island. I wanted to create a scene that related to the schools past. Including the road sign completed the story in this image. There are many crossroads located in PEI that have retained their historic name from early settlement times. Canoe Cove is one of them. The Canoe Cove School was built in approximately the year 1850. School consolidation swept the Island in the 1960s, and small schools, including Canoe Cove, were put out to pasture. I discovered this barn during a garden tour around Creemore in Central Ontario. I thought it had a lot of character with the weathered doors as it sat at the edge of the garden. Could I make an interesting images with this scene? I settled on this approach as a black and white to emphasize the textures. What's behind the doors? Various antique garden tools? Perhaps an old tractor or car? What would be your great barn find of your dreams? The tree and vines over the doors reminds me of a timeless summer day in the garden. Spring Crocus are one of the earliest flowers to bloom in spring. They push through the snow in gardens and lawns once the sun starts to warm up the soil and a welcome start to spring. These crocus tops have been nibbled by rabbits showing a more unusual apperance.
