Yak is a type of wild ox that is native to the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia. It is an integral part of many Asian cultures, especially in the Himalayas, where it is used as a source of dairy products, meat, and fiber. Yak milk is especially popular in the Tibetan and Nepalese cuisines. Yak meat is also used in some traditional dishes, such as momos and thukpa. Yak fiber is used to make ropes, tents, and other items. In some parts of Asia, yak is also used for riding and transportation, as it is known for its strength and endurance.

Vaishravana is a complex Buddhist deity who embodies many strands of thought and belief. Tibetans understand him foremost as the premier of the four guardians of the cardinal directions (lokapalas), associated with the North. In this role he serves as a protector (dharmapala) of Buddhist law. Here we see Vaishravana seated on his snow-lion mount in a stormy atmosphere, accompanied by his generals, the eight Lords of the Horses (asvapati), each riding a storm cloud. Central is Vaishravana himself, dominant is scale and represented emerging from a tumultuous skyscape. This composition is from a set of twenty-seven paintings of meditational deities commissioned by Situ Panchen Chokyi Jungne in the mid-1700s. The deity figures are painted in a Khyenri painting style following the original Gongkar Chode Monastery models. The landscape background follows a Chinese model. Ancient 12th-century Buddhist thangka from Kadampa Monastery (Central Tibet). Ratnasambhava, the Buddha that presides over the southern direction, is one of the Buddhas of the Five Families, each associated with a cardinal direction. Jina – meaning victorious was a title more often used for spiritual masters of Tīrthaṅkaras from the Jaina tradition. But the title was also used for Dhyani Buddhas in the Vajrayana tradition.

This ancient 16th-century painting depicts a rare subject in Tibetan art, the life of Buddha Shakyamuni and his previous incarnations as told in the Jataka tales. These stories form an essential component of Buddhist cosmology. This tangka has a Chinese inscription dating the work to the reign of the Wanli emperor (r. 1573–1619) of the Ming dynasty as well as Tibetan glosses identifying the scenes depicted. The glosses indicate that this tangka was made for a Tibetan client. Depicted around the central icon of a radiant Buddha is a series of scenes, each with mountains and monastic buildings serving as scene dividers. Both Jatakas depicted recount the bodhisattva’s self-sacrifice.

Ancient 14th-century Tibetan tangka with mandala of Jnanadakini. The central six-armed goddess (devi), Jnanadakini, is surrounded by eight emanations—representations of the devi that correspond to the colors of the mandala’s four directional quadrants. Four additional protective goddesses sit within the gateways. Surrounding the mandala are concentric circles that contain lotus petals, vajras, flames, and the eight great burial grounds. Additional dakinis and lamas occupy roundels in the corners. The upper register depicts lamas and mahasiddhas representing the Sakya school’s spiritual lineage. The lower register depicts protective deities and a monk who performs a consecration ritual.

Panjara Mahakala holds a curved knife and skull cup in front of his chest. His arms support the characteristics magic staff (gandi) that identifies him. The animals around his head are his messengers. Within a halo of flames the “Great Black One” is flanked by four deities: the four-armed Bhutadamara Vajrapani and the knife-brandishing Mahakala on the left and Ekajata and the four-armed Dusolma riding her mule on the right. Above these two pairs are Hevajra (left) and Chakrasamvara (right). The lineage of teachers depicted at the very top attributes the painting to the Sakya school. To the sides are the guardians of the directions and the bottom figures belong to Panjara Mahakala’s retinue.

This exquisite 15th-century thangka is the thirteenth painting in a set depicting the mandalas of the Vajravali cycle, a compendium of esoteric teachings compiled by the 11th-century Indian master Abhayakaragupta and widely transmitted in Tibet. It features, from left to right and top to bottom, the Vajradhatu mandala with an eight-armed form of Vairochana in the center; the Durgatiparishodhana mandala with the central Shakyasimha, another aspect of Vairochana; the mandala of the wrathful Bhutadamara; and the mandala of the goddess Marichi. The subsidiary deities form two assemblies that complement the top two mandalas but are not described in the Vajravali teachings.
