HMS Beagle was a Cherokee-class 10-gun brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, one of more than 100 ships of this class. The vessel was launched on 11 May 1820 from the Woolwich Dockyard on the River Thames. There was no immediate need for Beagle so she "lay in ordinary", moored afloat but without masts or rigging. She was then adapted as a survey barque and took part in three survey expeditions. One of theses voyages was the second voyage of HMS Beagle, which was notable for carrying the recently graduated naturalist Charles Darwin around the world.

Description

The second voyage of HMS Beagle, from 27 December 1831 to 2 October 1836, was the second survey expedition of HMS Beagle, under captain Robert FitzRoy who had taken over command of the ship on its first voyage after the previous captain committed suicide. FitzRoy had already thought of the advantages of having an expert in geology on board, and sought a gentleman naturalist to accompany them as a supernumerary. At the age of 22, the graduate Charles Darwin hoped to see the tropics before becoming a parson, and accepted the opportunity. He was greatly influenced by reading Charles Lyell's Principles of Geology during the voyage.

This design is based on Ernest Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition between 1914 and 1917. The story of the expedition is one of history's great tales of survival against the odds. The ship, Endurance, carried the expedition's crew to Antarctica before becoming trapped in pack ice for months in the Weddell Sea in 1915. The ship was eventually crushed by the ice and sank, leaving it's crew stranded on the Antarctic ice. The expedition then turned into a tale of survival as the stranded crew hauled the Endurance's three lifeboat's across the ice of the harsh polar environment before making it to Elephant Island. Shackleton later found rescue on the island of South Georgia and returned to rescue his men.
