According to Japanese legend, in 1846, a mysterious glowing object was spotted in the ocean, and when a town official went to investigate, a mermaid-like creature appeared. In the sketch he drew of it, it had long hair, a bird's bill, 3 legs and was covered in scales from the neck down. It identified itself to him as an Amabie, and delivered a prophecy before returning to the sea, telling him "If disease spreads, show a picture of me to those who fall ill and they will be cured." The story was printed in the Kawaraban (woodblock newspaper) and was disseminated throughout Japan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many Japanese believe seeing and distributing Amabie's image could keep infectious diseases away, and wear her on their person.

A simple visual representation of a concept that some people can't quite understand. In 1949, Crayola introduced a color to it's crayon box called “Flesh." Though it was eventually renamed "Peach," it remained in public school circulation for decades, where it was an early introduction to the concept of privilege to children who's flesh did not happen to match it.

Considered by many to be the "Birthplace of Grunge," Seattle's Rock Theater was actually 2 halls in one - Gorilla Gardens and the Omni Room - that would host 2 shows at the same time for 1 cover charge. By mixing hardcore punk rock with heavy metal, fans of both genres were exposed to one another, eventually resulting in an underground alternative scene that blended both. Green River, often called the first true "Grunge" band, got their start there, along with mainstays like Sonic Youth, the Butthole Surfers, Soundgarden, Hüsker Dü and the Violent Femmes. Sadly, the club never capitalized off the sound it pioneered. When fire marshalls shut down a Circle Jerks show in 1985, it started a riot, and the doors never opened again.
