This late 19th century US Military History photo features Colonel Theodore Roosevelt on his horse at the Rough Riders military camp, Montauk Point, New York. Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders had quarantined at Montauk Point following the Spanish-American War in Cuba, and although the conditions were no better than the Cuban battlefields initially, public outcry and investigation led to improvements like construction of two hospitals, electrical power plant and establishment of a military band.

Myer, founder of the Signal Corps, who developed a system of visual communications that could be transmitted by a flag or a torch. With the outbreak of the American Civil War, Myer was appointed as the first Signal Officer in the U.S. Army with the rank of major, and his Signal Department was fortified by detailed personnel until March 1863, when Congress authorized a regular U.S. Signal Corps for the duration of the war.
