The Kennet and Avon Canal at Aldermaston Wharf in West Berkshire. Beautifully peaceful now with a visitors' centre and teashop but once this was a hive of industry! The scene would have been busy with the wide Kennet boats loading and unloading their cargoes of farm goods, coal, building stone etc. Here were also the carpenters so necessary for maintaining the locks and bridges as well as forges for shoeing the boats' horses. Now a boat yard services leisure craft.

A narrowboat negotiating the River Avon just upstream from its meeting with the Severn at Tewkwesbury, Gloucestershire. This has been produced as a digital painting using chalk effects. Just further upstream is the Severn-Avon lock which enables boats to join the main course of the Avon and continue up to Stratford-on-Avon. The Kennet and Avon Canal as it makes its way westwards out of Newbury in West Berkshire. Here it joins with the River Kennet which at one time provided the water to power the corn and woollen mills along here. Newbury was renowned for its woollen industry and just ahead here is a row of weavers' cottages from the earlier days of cottage industry. The canal was used to transport wool, woollen goods as well as other commodities east to London via the Thames or west to Bath and Bristol.

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through the village of Pewsey in Wiltshire, England. This is the scene just above the bridge at Pewsey Wharf with narrow boats moored on the northern bank. This section of the canal was opened in 1810. The Kennet and Avon was designed to join Reading with Bristol and was constructed between 1794 and 1810. The coming of the Great Western Railway however spelt the end of the canal and it gradually fell into disuse.After restoration it was fully opened again in 1990. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

Avon Tires

A walk along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal in November sunshine. This is the stretch of waterway at Sheffield Bottom near Theale in Berkshire. This image has been finished in the style of a coloured pencil drawing. The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to join the Thames at Reading with Bristol, following the courses of the rivers Kennet and Avon, providing smooth transport of goods to London. The canal's heyday ended with the coming of the Great Western Railway.

Walking along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal near the village of Sulhamstead in West Berkshire in early autumn. Here we approach Tyle Mill Lock from the upsteam side. This canal was constructed to link two rivers, the Thames in the east and Avon in the west, enabling goods to be carried from London to Bristol. It fell into disuse due to the Great Western Railway being built but was restored in the late 1900s and is now a busy leisure waterway.

The Union Canal as it crosses Avon Aquaduct in Muiravonside Country Park, near Whitecross, Falkirk District, Scotland. The Avon Aquaduct runs through the middle of Muiravonside Country Park. Formerly an estate owned by the Stirling Family of Falkirk, this 170 acre park comprises woodlands, parkland and the River Avon. At 810 feet long, this aquaduct is the second longest in Britain and lifts the canal 86 feet over the River Avon. The spectacular views from the top make the climb worthwhile. This lock, no.92, is between Thatcham and Woolhampton in West Berkshire' It was constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of engineerJohn Hore who managed the building of all the locks in this area. It has a rise/fall of 7ft 7ins. Just behind us is the road bridge carrying the Beenham Road over the waterway.

Stratford upon Avon

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through Newbury in Berkshire. This scene, taken from the West Mills swing bridge shows the canal as it heads towards the centre of the town, about to pass through Town Lock. On the right bank is the site of West Mills - Newbury was once a busy agricultural and woollen textile manufacturing centre. The tower of St Nicolas church, restored during the early 1500s stands above the surrounding buildings.
