Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre (1905-80) was a French philosopher, novelist, and political activist. He was one of the key figures in the philosophy of existentialism which he introduced in his work Existentialism Is a Humanism. One of Satre's most well known philosophical novels is Nausea, which was published in 1938 and deemed by Sartre himself to be one of his best works.

Jean Genet (French: [ʒɑ̃ ʒənɛ]; 19 December 1910 – 15 April 1986) was a French novelist, playwright, poet, essayist, and political activist. Early in his life he was a vagabond and petty criminal, but he later took to writing. His major works include the novels The Thief's Journal and Our Lady of the Flowers, and the plays The Balcony, The Maids and The Screens. In 1949, when Genet was threatened with a life sentence after ten convictions, Cocteau and other prominent figures, including Jean-Paul Sartre and Pablo Picasso, successfully petitioned the French President to have the sentence set aside.
