The Ancient Egyptian god of cats Bastet

This painting is based on an Egyptian myth. The original myth goes that a lioness-headed goddess, Sekhmet, was sent by Ra to punish mankind for their sins. Sekhmet enjoyed this task a little too much and would have destroyed the world if not for Ra's clever intervention. He transformed all the blood that she spilled into wine. When she went to consume the blood, she got drunk and fell asleep, just short of total destruction.

Egyptian Cat -Mosaic Art

This depiction of Sekhmet comes from an Ancient Egyptian menat counterweight. A menat was a type of heavily beaded ritual necklace and the Sekhmet image was used as a counterweight on the back. There are representations of women holding the necklace, possibly shaking them to make noise, during ceremonies honoring the goddess. Here you can see Sekhmet represented as a lion-headed goddess figure. I've recreated this depiction of Sekhmet in my own style based off a menat counterweight located in the Met.

Bastet, also called Bast, ancient Egyptian goddess worshiped in the form of a lioness and later a cat. The daughter of Re, the sun god, Bastet was an ancient deity whose ferocious nature was ameliorated after the domestication of the cat around 1500 bce.
