My friends asked me why did I go back to Beihai Park during a 2-day stay in Beijing, a park that I have spent almost 8 hours at during a previous trip, when I could have gone to other just as impressive, if not even more impressive places. The answer is – I always wanted to get this shot right!!! And I think I got it this time. Beihai Park has a fairly large garden area that is dedicated to bamboo trees. An image of the entire garden would look just “blah” and would not show the intricate carvings on each tree stem in the garden; hence this photo (and the previous one by the same title). I can’t tell you what these carvings read, and I don’t how long it would take to carve these Chinese characters, but they sure look artistically beau...

Beihai park, a public park and former imperial garden located in the northwestern part of the Imperial City, Beijing. First built in the 11th century, it is among the largest of all Chinese gardens and contains numerous historically important structures, palaces, and temples.

This is an image of a fairly large jade piece of a Siberian tiger almost springing into action. If I would take a good guess, this piece stands at about 4 ft high, 8 ft long and 3 ft wide. It was very difficult to fit the entire piece in the frame, so I chose to focus on the face and not show the rest of it due to its shear size and the many distracting elements surrounding it. Many life-size pieces of warriors stood in the main gallery of this jade factory. This is an image of one of the warrior's faces. The entire piece stood at about 7 ft long, 2-3 ft wide and 2-3 ft deep. I chose not to show the rest of this carving (or any of the other full size pieces ) as the brilliant neon lights all around were just over powering for this type of photography (especially with no shades or umbrellas at hand). To summarize China today through the feet and foot-ware I saw. Modern high-heeled fashion foot-ware, strong protective working foot-ware. Wedding with bride wearing white and green sport foot-ware. Sturdy long-lasting foot-ware as well as feet resting and even being used to do the washing. Diverse modern China.

This Simatai section of the Great Wall was built from 550-577 during the Northern Qi Dynasty and rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty. The Ming Dynasty spanned the years 1368-1644, and this part of the wall was redone in the Hongwu years by General Qi Jiguang. It is about three and a half miles long or 5.4 kilometers. There are 35 beacon towers in this short stretch of the Great Wall. The eastern side of the Simatai Great Wall is steep and treacherous, so more towers were built for better safety and security. Somehow, the undaunted Chinese army managed to build the wall and many towers on some of the highest, most rugged cliffs in China. The highest point is 1,000 meters in elevation or 3,281 feet.

While in Beijing, I had the pleasure of touring perhaps the largest jade carving factory I have ever been to. It was just amazing to witness the detailed and intricate pieces of all sizes and shapes and colours. The following few images are just a sample of what I saw in their massive showroom. This first piece is what you see upon entering the main doors. The main piece (on the wall) is of a Chinese Phoenix and Dragon, and stands at about 10 ft in diameter.
