Green Heron by Debra Martz Bird watching in Port Aransas, Texas is always a delight for me...especially since I live within a 20 minute drive. I sometimes go looking for specific birds and other days, such as this one, just see what happens to show up where I'm birding. I wasn't expecting this Green H56eron to be close by the path I was walking so what a treat! A good birding day for sure!

I chose this one to focus on because with each circle around it was coming a bit closer to where I was. A small, grayish brown dove with dark bars on the breast and back, and bare blue skin around the eye. The call is a rapid series of short “coos,” higher pitched and faster than Spotted Dove. Native to Southeast Asia, but introduced to many islands, including the Hawaiian Islands, French Polynesia, Mauritius, and the Seychelles. It is generally quite abundant throughout both its native and non-native range, especially in urban and suburban areas; typically not found in dense forests. (Source: eBird)

Long-tailed cuckoo that clambers about in the branches like a squirrel. Male predominantly bright rufous-brown with darker tail, female has gray head and chest. Both sexes have bright blue skin around the eye and blue bill. Forages in middle levels of vegetation in lowland and foothill forests, singly or in pairs. I looked up and around a bit and then there it was. Verdin Snagging Insects From the Agarita by Debra Martz Many songbirds enjoy the fruits of the Agarita plant and/or the insects which the plant attracts as well and we were fortunate enough to have one in our campsite. The blue-eared kingfisher (Alcedo meninting) is found in Asia, ranging across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is found mainly in dense shaded forests where it hunts in small streams. It is darker crowned, with darker rufous underparts and lacking the rufous ear stripe of the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) which is found in more open habitats. A number of subspecies have been described that differ in measurement and colour shade. Adult males have an all dark bill while females have a reddish lower mandible.The blue-eared kingfisher is largely resident within its range. They usually perch on branches overhanging densely shaded streams before diving below to capture prey that includes crustaceans, dragonfly larvae and fish.

Chunky tree-dweller with blood-red eyes. Spectacular male is decked out in midnight black and electric blue. Female is dark turquoise with dark wingtips. Gathers at fruiting and flowering trees. A species of lowland and foothill evergreen forests, though will occasionally venture into gardens and plantations. Song includes various notes, often paired, such as “wit!” and “wi’wit!” Gives “tik” calls when flying overhead (Source: eBird)

Golden-fronted Woodpecker Out on a Limb by Debra Martz The Golden-fronted Woodpecker is a rather common sighting when I visit the southern area of Texas along the Mexico border. It is mainly a woodpecker of Mexico and Central America but it reaches the United States only in the brushlands and open woodlands of Texas and Oklahoma.

he blue-winged leafbird (Chloropsis moluccensis) is a species of leafbird found in forest and second growth throughout Southeast Asia as far east as Borneo and as far south as southern Sumatra. The male is green-bodied with a yellow-tinged head, black face and throat. It has a blue moustachial line. The female differs in that it has a greener head and blue throat, and young birds are like the female but without the blue throat patch. It is common to fairly common throughout most of its range, and therefore considered to be of least concern by BirdLife International. (Source: Wikipedia)

Bright yellow cheek stands out like a sunburst on the muddy-looking face of this barbet. Traces of red and blue also brighten the head of this heavy-billed green bird. It is sometimes split into two species, one including only the nominate subspecies, E. j. javanicus, and one including all the remaining subspecies The banded broadbill is a striking, large-bodied bird, with a length of 21.5–23.0 cm (8.5–9.1 in). The weight of 10 adult pallidus specimens from the Malay Peninsula was 65.1–95.0 g (2.30–3.35 oz), males weighing slightly more than females. I love watching these playful Wrens. So much so that I decided to be playful with the editing for this one. We have several of these that visit our back yard, sometimes running around the patio, up on the chairs, checking out the grill, the feeders and everything in between. Immature White Ibis at Sunrise by Debra Martz A great place to be for sunrise as many birds arrive at the pond to start feeding. If I lived in Weslaco, Texas, I would be on the deck at the Estero LLano Grande State Park as many mornings as possible. The sunrise adds a beautiful golden glow to the pond; combining that glow with the wonderful sounds of all the birds is a great, refreshing way to start the day!

Spring is in the Air - Northern Beardless Tyrannulets by Debra Martz What a treat to see this pair while on a bird walk at Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco, Texas. I was not the only birder that was thrilled, excited, wowed by this pair as they fly in and out of this Ball Moss. They are so tiny, measuring in at only 4-1/2" and a rare sighting in Texas. We heard their call and really thought that would be all we would get of them...just their beautiful sound! Spring is in the Air

Juvenile Cormorant Profile by Debra Martz Sometimes birds will cooperate and stay in an area long enough for you to get several shots...this was one of those times. An adult cormorant would be much darker all over. There are similarities in the Neotropic and Double-crested and sometimes hard to distinguish. But because of the more acute angle at the gape and not having dark lores I determined this to be a Neotropic. It would be much easier if they were side by side because of size...the Neotropic is a bit smaller. They dive underwater to fish and this one came back with a little twig of seagrass. They are a resident of SE Texas and further into Mexico and Central America.

Eastern Kingbird in the Country by Dbebra Martz I had just turned onto the gravel road that leads to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge when I saw this Kingbird snatch an insect from the air and then return to this fence wire. So I stopped the vehicle and slowly opened the door. It sat there a few extra seconds after I was out of the truck and was able to compose and get a few shots before it flew off into the distance.
