I used the Sherman Gallifreyan generator to produce the symbols; the big one says, "Chinny and Sandshoes", the one by Eleven says, "Geronimo", and the one by Ten says, "Allons-y".

This painting was commissioned by my cousin, who lives in the Vegas area. He's a lawyer and also obsessed with Doctor Who. He wanted a western-themed Doctor Who painting to hang in his office. This was my first Doctor Who painting. I was watching a short webisode prior to the ‘Bells of St. John.’ At this time, the Doctor had lost the Ponds and had two strange encounters with the impossible girl. He was alone. Drifting lazily on a swing. I’d been struggling with my own loneliness for years following my divorce. Here, the Doctor captured how I’d been feeling, so I decided to paint it because I wanted it on my wall. This led me to paint others. Less than a year later, my walls were covered with Doctor Who paintings.

In the episode of "Vincent and the Doctor," Amy Pond surprising Van Gogh with a garden full of sunflowers, hinting that maybe he'd like to paint them. Van Gogh remarks that sunflowers are always somewhere between living and dying, half-human as they lean towards the sun. And that he finds them a bit disgusting, but a challenge. It's one of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who, in part because the story expresses mental illness in a very real way that resonates with me. But also, because I'm an artist heavily influenced by Van Gogh.

This is one of my biggest paintings. I wanted a painting that looked into the Tardis. Initially, I wanted the Doctor to have his hand out-stretched, beckoning me to join him. But I wondered too much if I was worthy of such adventures. I have struggled with social anxieties a lot and have found it too easy to retreat into myself (and into shows like this). So instead, I had the Doctor look as though he was considering me - Are you ready to follow the Mad Man in the box? Are you willing to conquer the real world? Some day.
