Flying Scotsman LNER number 4472 became the first steam locomotive to be officially authenticated at a speed of 100 MPH on the 30th November 1934 on a special test run. Unofficially the GWR locomotive 3440 City of Truro was timed at running in excess of 100 mph during a run from Plymouth to London in 1904.

The Flying Scotsman is an express passenger train service that operates between Edinburgh and London, the capitals respectively of Scotland and England, via the East Coast Main Line. The service began in 1862 as the Special Scotch Express until it was officially adopted in 1924. It is currently operated by the London North Eastern Railway.

60103 Flying Scotsman has been described as the most famous steam locomotive in the world. Built in 1923 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at Doncaster Works to a design of H.N. Gresley, it was employed on long-distance express trains on the LNER and its successors, British Railways Eastern and North-Eastern Regions, notably on the London to Edinburgh Flying Scotsman train service after which it was named.

History was made as the Flying Scotsman steam locomotive, an HST, a 225 electric unit and one of the new Azuma trains run south side by side on all four tracks on the East Coast Mainline north of York on the 23rd of April 2017. It's never been done before and is unlikely to happen again.
