Pyay also known as Prome is principal town of Pyay Township in the Bago Region in Burma (Myanmar). Pyay is located on the Irrawaddy River and is 260 km northwest of Rangon. The British Irrawaddy Flotilla Company established the current town in the late 19th century on the Irrawaddy River as a transshipment point for cargo between Upper and Lower Burma. This shot was taken as ox carts were unloading a boat on the river.

Young Pa'o woman at Phaung Daw Oo Paya market looking at shampoo. Pa-O people are the second largest ethnic group in Shan State. Their homeland tends to correspond with the most visited part of Shan State, the Kalaw, Pindaya and Inle lake region, although the Pa-O are also found east past Taunggyi and south into Kayah State Highland Pa-O traditional dress is highly distinctive, with the women wearing plain black or indigo tunics with narrow blue and/or red trim and brightly coloured turbans wrapped around their heads, mostly in orange and red. As with many ethnic groups, the menfolk don’t favour traditional dress too much, though you may often also see them wearing turbans in a much wider colour and pattern range.

This woman is taking a break from the market at Phaung Daw Oo Paya at Inle Lake. Another of the weekly markets. The pagoda itself houses five ancient buddha images that are not recognisable because of the layers of gold leaves stuck onto them. However, best time to visit is September.

Another Cone Fisherman. This time taken on trip across Inle lake to Maing Thauk where another market is held each week. Located on the eastern side of the Inle Lake. This village is the place of colonial era Fort Steadman whose remains now are a few crumbling gravestones near the orphanage. The village of Maing Thauk is built on both land and water, on stilts. The two halves of the villages are linked by a 450 meter long wooden bridge.

I'm sure you've seen many of these, but I like it anyway. This is on the Bago River. As you can see one man controls the boat while the other deals with the net. I have watched fishermen on these polluted rivers many times. The size of the fish they catch are smaller than an average hand.

Sunset over Inle Lake with cone fishermen. The fishermen on Inle Lake have a really interesting way of paddling their boats. They wrap their leg around the oar and paddle that way. It is beautiful how they can glide through the water and still have use of both of their hands.

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (also known as Golden Rock) is a well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State, Myanmar. It is a small pagoda (7.3 metres) built on the top of a granite boulder covered with gold leaves pasted on by devotees. According to legend, the Golden Rock itself is precariously perched on a strand of the Buddha's hair. The rock and the pagoda are at the top of Mt. Kyaiktiyo. It is the third most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Burma after the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Pagoda. A glimpse of the "gravity defying" Golden Rock is believed to be enough of an inspiration for any person to turn to Buddhism. Didn't turn me though. In order to get to Golden Rock you need to arrive at a small town called Kinpun at...

There is not much of interest in Kinpun itself nor for some distance around the town. However, I did come across what looked like woodcutters some distance outside Kinpun. They seem to have set up a small village in a large expanse of countryside and were just about finished cutting down all the trees in sight and turning them into firewood and charcoal. Think the land was then going to be turned into a plantation of some kind. Firewood is used a lot in Burma. See Mandalay photos.

Here the woman is weaving cloth, others use silk and even lotus stems. The cloth is also dyed on site by other family members. She lives and works in the building which is divided between work space and living space on upper floor.

The Pa'O are the second largest ethnic group in .Shan State,and also live in Kayin State, Kayah State, Mon State and Bago Division. They are believed to be of Tibeto-Burman stock. Migrant workers and people fleeing ongoing conflict inside Myanmar means many Pa-Oh people now live in Mae Hong Son Province, in Northern Thailand. The Pa-O people are two distinct groups - The Lowland, based around Thaton, and The Highland from Taunggyi and its surrounds. However, there may be as many as twenty-four Pa-O subgroups. U Bein Bridge is a crossing that spans the Taungthaman Lake near Amanapura in Burma. The 1.2-kilometre bridge was built around 1850 and is believed to be the oldest and longest teakwood bridge in the world. Construction began when the capital of Ava Kingdom moved to Amanapura, and the bridge is named after the mayor who had it built. It is used as an important passageway for the local people. The bridge was built from wood reclaimed from the former royal palace in Inwa. It features 1,086 pillars that stretch out of the water, some of which have been replaced with concrete.

The nets are unique to Inle lake, which is very shallow - fish are trapped inside the cone when fishermen push it to the bottom. The single paddle is also unique to Inle Lake, and the fishermen propel it with one leg while they wield the net between the other leg and an arm.

Soon U Ponya Shin Paya is the most important of the temples on Sagaing Hill. It's central 30 m high stupa was first built in 1312. Legend says that the pays appeared overnight built by king's minister Ponya.
