I spotted this pub in the East of Hull, a lovely symmetry to inspire me, curves and arches, compact and grand at once. The brick is red, warm, absorbing the heat of many summers, radiating warmth in the depth of winter when fog rolls in from the Humber, the sound of cheerful voices and the glow of company from within. I am intrigued and want to know the age of the building, its history and its namesake. The work is rich in colour, with hints of hot August weather and a bright blue sky. A great gift, a wonderful souvenir of Hull.

My walk took me further away from the heart of the New Town, past Scotland Street, and Broughton Street, down to an area of secret parks and gardens and streets that seem to have fallen off the grand design, ending suddenly in a wall of railings and trees. A certain austerity creeps in, a Scottish solidity, pure and simple and strong. I admire this block of flats, built of large chunks of stone, with high windows and high ceilings. I marvel at the softness of the colours on the interior walls, little triangles seen from the street. The sky too is pure, blue, deep, cool. I wanted to capture that light, and the golden colours. This is our view from our window in Houston. We live in the historical part of town. I like this photo as it feels like an old-fashioned one, while I just took it a few days ago, in February of 2016. I guess the police man on the horse adds to the dated feeling. The red building is the Cotton Exchange Building. February 2017, iphone 7plus.

In a city in the centre of France I came across this beautiful old building. I was fascinated by the blue, by the faded almost metallic blue that formed the signage and shutters. By the grace of God. It seemed an odd name, filled with meaning and evoking an era before commercialization, before the street surrendered to chains and the gluttony of fast food. Around me the old city centre vibrates gently, promising old fashioned cheese shops, the glorious aroma of roasting coffee beans and the timeless peel of bells from the cathedral.A great souvenir of France, a lovely addition to any collection, and a perfect gift.

The Dean Village sits quietly below the Dean Bridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith. It has always fascinated me, part Victorian and part Scottish Baronial, quiet, secluded, tranquil. A place for Christmas morning walks, for a cut through to Stockbridge and the haunted St Bernard’s Well. It is achingly pretty, quaint, and calming. This work is rich in heat, in colour and in detail.

A favorite walk, a place of constant return, unchanging, the gentle assurance of history and memory. Here I find a wonderful café with cream cakes and silver tea pots and faded, retro beauty, A portal to another decade, to another time. I am transfixed by the blue and the pink stucco, and by the vivid colors of the shop fronts. This is my secret corner of London that forever belongs to me. The painting is a wonderful gift of London and a perfect addition to any collection.

I love London’s mews. Little corners of peace, cobbles that still ring to ghostly hooves. Here London belongs to me once more. The shadows keep patches of cool shade, and mysterious windows look down on me. I imagine how wonderful it would be to live here, to tend a little urban garden of potted plants and fragrant wisteria. I am drawn to the bricks, to the scorched soot-drenched terracotta that evokes a London of yore, of belching sulphurous smoke and a whiff of the once imperial capital, that city of dreadful delight. Each brick holds a story. The work is rich in colour and in detail. It makes a wonderful gift, a perfect souvenir of London, and a great addition to any collection of urban-themed works.

I am old enough to remember the Grassmarket as dark, insalubrious, filled with the ghostly magic of times past. It is different now, lighter, brighter, cleaner. Where smoky pubs once stood, figures nebulous behind frosted glass, there are a plethora of smart cafés and bars, throngs of visitors and the clinking of wine glasses. Still, it is a place of great historical significance, a feeling of wonder as we look up at the castle, erstwhile fortress, dungeon and palace all at once. From all angles history infuses the air, with the spirit of bodysnatchers, Covenanters, witchery and the hangman’s rope. The work is full of colour, of summer heat, and is a wonderful souvenir of Edinburgh, a lovely gift for a home.

A strong heat begins to dissipate over the French city. Shadows lengthen now, dust settles, tempers calm. The air is infused with lavender soap, with the scent of roasting chicken, cold beer, red wine, rosemary and thyme. It is pleasant to wander alone, to explore, to own. Flowers grow, shutters creak, and the maze of streets invites us inwards.

Saint Michael, the Archangel, On the corner niches of many buildings in Valletta are to be found sculptures, mainly Christian in nature, and often near or on church buildings. The tradition of setting up niches in streets dates back to the Roman era. In Christian times, images of Christ, Our Lady and Christian Saints, replaced those of Roman Gods. These niches were often decorated and lit, thus paying homage to the image within, as well as providing some illumination during the night. Canon 6D, zoom lens.
