Houston's new baseball team was named the "Colt .45s" after a "Name The Team" contest was held, and the selected team colors were blue and orange. The first team was a collection of cast-offs stocked primarily through an expansion draft held after the 1961 season. 1962 was the first season in franchise history with Harry Craft as their first manager. The .45s finished eighth among the National League's ten teams with a record of 64–96, 36½ games behind the league champion.
