Catherine Labouré entered the novitiate of the Daughters of Christian Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Paris in 1830. On the evening of November 27, 1830, Our Lady Mary spoke to Sister Catherine with the words "God wants to entrust you with a mission...". Mary shows Catherine a medal and instructs her to have one minted. From July 30, 1832, the first medals are distributed and handed out to the sick and needy. In the first four years alone, two and a half million were distributed. Due to the healings, conversions and mendings, the medal very soon received the nickname "Miraculous Medal".
