Portrait Of A Pelican by Debra Martz ......................... I decided to take my camera with my zoom lens and go to the beach with hopes of getting some bird photos. As it turned out, after several hours, the birds around my location were mainly seagulls and that was not what I was hoping to capture this time. Brown Pelicans flew high over head and at times out over the waves but still not what I was hoping to get. So where would I happen to get this close-up of a Brown Pelican? From the back deck at home! There it was sitting on the railing of our neighbors house. Now my only problem was that my background was houses across the canal and I didn't want that either. Design made from a photography of a brown pelican. The text reads: It is one of three pelican species found in the Americas and one of two that feed by diving in water. It is the smallest of the nine pelican species, but is often one of the larger seabirds in their range nonetheless. As the brown pelican flies at a maximum height of 18 to 21 m (60 to 70 ft) above the ocean, it can spot schools of fish while flying. In 1902, it was made a part of the official Louisiana seal and, in 1912, a pelican and her young became part of the Flag of Louisiana as well.

This is my watercolor painting of the Louisiana state bird and flower, the brown pelican and magnolia. Louisiana was admitted to the union on April 30, 1812 as the 18th state. The pelican is famous for its big bill and pouch. The creamy-white blooms of the magnolia are abundant in the state. This painting is part of my state birds and state flowers collection.

Just Passing By by Debra Martz And that is what this Brown Pelican did. Just passed right on by me. I was hoping for maybe a turn or a plunge for a fish... nope. Guarding the Light ©Debra Martz I couldn't believe this Brown Pelican was perched up high on this street light. I was in the area about 4 years ago and saw one perched in the exact same place and thought it was strange at the time as I had never seen a pelican perch on something like this. I guess it did offer a good vantage point as it was right by the boat ramp at Goose Island State Park in Texas. It was not bothered by my presence as it stayed put while I walked around taking photos...guess it didn't want another pelican or bird to get its light. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved
