The medicine in this vintage pharmacy or apothecary were used for common ailments such as stomach ache, coughs and kidney problems. These drugs were not regulated and the formula for each was known only to the creator of the drug.

Longs Drugs is an American chain with approximately 70 drugstores throughout the state of Hawaii and formerly in the Continental US. Before being acquired by CVS Health in 2008, it was a chain of over 500 stores, located primarily on the West Coast of the United States. Besides Hawaii, it had stores located in California, Nevada, Arizona, Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Utah and Washington, and was headquartered in Walnut Creek, California.

The mortar and pestle was very important in a pharmacy because the pharmacist used the pestle to grind drugs into powers in the mortar in order to make medicine. You can see a mortar and pestle displayed prominently in this old fashioned apothecary.

Mortar and pestle were used daily in the drug store when preparing prescriptions. Several types and sizes were often needed. The metal mortar and pestle fell out of use beginning in the early 20th century, due to its weight and difficulties preventing rust and corrosion.

The mortar and pestle were very important in the early pharmacy because it was used to grind medicine. They came in various sizes as can be seen by the large pestle in this image.

The MUSTEROLE CO., manufacturer of a famous over-the-counter ointment, began in 1905 after pharmacist A. L. McLaren developed a mustard ointment at his Cedar and E. 97th St. drugstore. As the ointment's popularity grew, McLaren was unable to maintain his supply and eventually restricted its sale to regular customers. The mustard preparation's success convinced George Miller, owner of a nearby hardware store, to sell his store and invest in an expanded production and packaging facility for the product. After Miller and McLaren mobilized additional investors, the Musterole Co. was incorporated in 1907. The company soon moved to 4612 St. Clair and then to 1748 E. 27th St. The medication, known as Musterole, was used to relieve chest congestion

Pay 'n Save was a retail company founded by Monte Lafayette Bean in Seattle, Washington, in 1940. Over the years, Pay 'n Save was the leading drugstore chain in Washington and was the owner of several Washington-based retailers, including Lamonts and Ernst.
