Wayne and Ron’s Record Shop opened July 15, 1971 at 3009 East Lake Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Wayne, aka 'Honey Bear,' lived in an apartment at the back of the store and slept on a custom-made round 'record' water bed, or at least that is what overnight guests choosing not to be named have said. Weird waterbeds aside, Wayne and Ron’s was known for having a killer selection of records and ran huge discounts on every band that came to town, making them a popular spot for decades to come.

They were known for its vast selection, with many locations in buildings the size of a typical grocery store, reportedly stocking $500,000 in inventory. Peaches were also known for in-store events with bands and artists, huge murals of the latest album covers on the side of its buildings and for selling records from fruit-crates. The first store opened on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles in 1975 and later that year, a second was opened in Atlanta. At its peak, Peaches had 50 stores in 22 cities with over 2,000 employees. In June 1981, Peaches filed a petition for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 citing $20 million in debt

The first Musicland store opened in 1955 in Minneapolis. The company expanded rapidly during the mall boom in the 1980s and continued to grow into the 90s, becoming the US's largest specialty retailer of entertainment products. In addition to Musicland the company also ran Sam Goody, Suncoast, OnCue, and the Media Play Superstore Chains. The Musicland Group was purchased by Best Buy in 2001 at the height of Musicland's success, and unfortunately led to its demise. By then, Musicland numbered over 1300 stores, but Best Buy failed to generate the results they were looking for, losing $85 million in 2002. When I was in highschool in the mid-'80s and starting to delve into alternative culture, I kept hearing about this place called Cellophane Square in the University District. It was supposed to have punk and goth band t-shirts, records and tapes, all kinds of underground merchandise and was where you'd buy tickets to punk shows. Having grown up on the Eastside, hanging out at Bellevue Square as a kid, I pictured Cellophane Square as a punk rock mall. Imagine my surprise when I finally turned 16 and could drive to Seattle and found out Cellophane Square was a tiny, packed record store just off the Ave on 42nd (now the home of a Taco Del Mar).

The late great Subway Stop record store Record Mart- Literally an underground shop in the times square subway. Great source for Vinyl Records. Gone but not forgotten part of the NYC Music scene. Great vintage New York City gift, Great gift for New York music lovers and vinyl record crate diggers.
