Opening its doors in 1924, the 700 room Hotel Cecil’s developers had planned for the massive Beaux Arts-style building to be a premier destination for business travelers visiting downtown Los Angeles. Initially billing itself as “a popular hotel of fine distinction” in advertisements, the Great Depression’s arrival just five years later meant the influx of wealthy business travelers became a slow trickle and that tagline was changed to “a popular priced hotel of fine distinction.” Located just steps from what would become known as Skid Row, the now discount hotel became found itself as a housing option for the local transient population, which was estimated to already surpass 10,000 people in the 1930s.

Spring versus Destruction

Rolling Acres mall opened in Akron, Ohio on August 6, 1975. There was one anchor, Sears, and 21 additional stores. JCPenney opened a year later as a second anchor. A new wing was added in 1977, along with a third anchor store, Montgomery Ward. Further expansion in 1978 added a new two-story wing called the Promenade, which included a food court called “Prom-N-Eat” (later renamed “Picnic Place”) and local chain O’Neil’s as a fourth anchor. The mall was foreclosed in June 2016 and demo began in 2017.

This was taken 11 years ago in a disused malt kiln (Paul's Malt) in my home town. This huge building is long gone but a venture inside was very interesting. The apocalyptic remains may not be to everyone's taste but they appeal to me for some strange reason. Demolition Day This building was originally called Paul's Malt or just The Malt Kiln and was visible from miles away as you headed towards Louth in Lincolnshire, UK, England. It's destruction was harder than anyone could have imagined as it was constructed with reinforced concrete with steel rebar hooding it together. The spray stream in the foreground was to dampen down all the dust from the concrete that seemed to create it's own cloud around the building. By Paul Thompson Photography

Stenigot Early Warning Radar System The derelict radar dishes of Stenigot in Lincolnshire litter the landscape but give an interesting viewpoint. Stenigot was chosen because it occupies the highest ground in eastern England between Kent and Yorkshire. The Chain Home system was the first application of radar to air defence. It spread rapidly before 1940. It was an important factor in making sure that Britain had an effective level of warning against air attack. This is part of a series of images I am working on in an attempt to highlight the plight of the homeless on the streets, principally of the UK as that is where I am from, but essentially anywhere in the world. This, taken on the streets of Leeds, West Yorkshire UK is another example of a guy having to resort to begging for his living. I am part of the same society that this guy is also a part of. But I am blessed to be part of the society that would fall into the definition of “haves” rather than that of the “have not’s” and I am grateful to my God for that. At the moment I am unsure where this project is going to take me and this image is one of the first tentative step into an un-known world for me, but whatever, it is my intent...

The guy sitting on the floor is homeless, I know I chatted to him. This was in the middle of Leeds City Centre on a busy Friday morning, but I manged to catch this moment whiles the street around him was free of other pedestrians. The emptiness of the street acts as a metaphor for many of the homeless ans those that sleep rough in our towns and cities. The repetitive nature of the receding buildings acts as a metaph...

The guy sitting on the floor is homeless, I know I chatted to him. This was in the middle of Leeds City Centre on a busy Friday morning, but I manged to catch this moment whiles the street around him was free of other pedestrians. The guy was sitting in front of vacant shop units and was simply whiling away his time waiting for anyone to drop something into his cup that he had placed on the pavement in front of him. I am part of the same society that this guy is also a part of. But I am blessed to be part of the society ...
