Pic 'N' Save Corporation (later MacFrugals) was at one time the second-largest closeout retail chain in the United States. William Zimmerman founded Pic 'N' Save Corporation in 1950 in Culver City, California. By 1985, it operated 90 stores in California and six other U.S. states. In 1991, the company changed its name to MacFrugals. It later expanded to the Southwest and into the South, but left both markets in the late '90s. In 1997, Consolidated Stores Corporation bought out the remaining MacFrugals stores for $995 million in stock and slowly began converting them to their closeout retail store brand.

Remembering Hecht’s Department Store. Washington DC and Baltimore Maryland. Hecht's was a large chain of department stores that operated mainly in the mid-Atlantic area. The firm originated in Baltimore in 1860. And then in 1896 Hecht’s opened a store in Washington DC, which eventually moved to a grand glass and marble store at the corner of 7th and F Streets Northwest in 1925. By 2005, Hecht's had some 81 stores in Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The family-owned business made customers a top priority and believed in a personalized shopping experience.

Remembering the great Abraham & Straus Department Store. Officially Abraham & Straus but everybody just called it A & S. They had a number of different logos over the years but this is my favorite. The company's 841,000-square-foot Brooklyn flagship store was located at 422 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn. In 2003, the Brooklyn Heights Association and the Municipal Art Society put the building on a list of 28 historic buildings in downtown Brooklyn that needed to be protected.

Frederick & Nelson was for many years known as Seattle's premier department store. Founded by Donald E. Frederick and Nels B. Nelson in 1891, they began selling used furniture during the rebuilding of Seattle after the Great Fire of 1889. The business expanded to include home delivery of goods, a tea room, and ready-to-wear men's and women's fashions, a great deal of which was very much on-trend and from upscale designers from around the world. The owners built a reputation for elegance and customer service that was beyond compare in the Seattle area at the time.

Garfinckel's Department Store - Washington DC

Founded in 1962 by the F. W. Woolworth Company, Woolco was an American retail chain. Unlike Woolworth's five-and-dime stores, Woolco was a full-line discount department store, and the creation of the new format coincided with the expansion of suburbia. At its peak, Woolco had hundreds of stores in the US, as well as in Canada and the UK. Woolworth's flagship stores were still doing well, but the company wanted to tap into the growing discount department store market without diluting its dominant position in the variety store business. The first Woolco was located in Columbus, Ohio, and by 1966, there were 18 in the US, and nine in Canada with plans for 30 stores to be added per year.

Remembering Mongomery Ward. The original Montgomery Ward & Co. was a world-pioneering mail-order business and later also a leading department store chain that operated between 1872 and 2001. Many humoruosly refrerred to it as Monkey Ward.

Opened in 1890 by William Filene, the store got its start as Filene's Sons and Company in 1881, selling fancy goods and women's ready-to-wear apparel. Sons Edward and Lincoln made the retail giant into a household name after inheriting the store in 1901. This scan is from a 50 year old Filenes bag and has some of the inconsistencies of the original design. Colors have been changed for the purposes of this design.
