The function of the glomeruli is to filter waste products from the blood. After the reabsorption of certain substances elsewhere in the kidney, the liquid is transported to the bladder as urine.

The ball of cells (yellow) of the embryo is known as a morula, a cluster of almost identical, rounded cells, each containing a central nucleus. This 16-cell embryo is about three days old. It is at the early stage of transformation from a single cell to a human composed of millions of cells. The cells multiply by repeated cleavage divisions (mitosis) and will form a hollow ball of cells (the blastocyst). B anthracis are rod-shaped, Gram-positive, spore-forming bacteria. The bacteria can infect the skin (cutaneous anthrax), causing raised itchy lesions, the lungs (pulmonary anthrax), which is fatal unless treated quickly, and the digestive system (gastrointestinal anthrax), causing vomiting of blood and severe diarrhoea. All forms can be fatal if left untreated. Treatment is with antibiotics. Neutrophils are the most abundant white blood cell and are part of the body's immune system.

The macrophage, when activated, will engulf (phagocytose) the bacteria and destroy them as part of the body's immune response. M. tuberculosis causes the disease tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is spread by coughs and sneezes.

The bony capsule that encloses the organ has been removed to reveal the organ's spiral structure. Rows of sensory hairs within the organ of Corti convert sound vibrations into nerve impulses that are sent along the auditory nerve to the brain. Different sound frequencies stimulate hairs in different positions along the spiral. Low frequencies stimulate those near the top of the spiral and high frequencies stimulate those near the bottom.

At above centre is the nucleus (large oval) containing genetic material in the form of DNA. Surrounding the nucleus is cell cytoplasm filled with endoplasmic reticulum. The endo- plasmic reticulum (ER) is a complex system of membranes which form a network of flattened cisternae (cavities). These function as reservoirs and channels for the storage and transport of substances through the cytoplasm. Here, the ER is coated in tiny particles known as ribosomes, responsible for the synthesis of cell proteins. Magnification: x10,000 at 6x4.5cm size.

Many species of Staphylococcus cause disease in man through secretion of exotoxins: S. aureus is commonly present on skin and mucous membranes and causes boils and internal abscesses, and is the commonest cause of pyogenic (pus-forming) infections in man. Other species produce toxins causing food poisoning. Staphylococcal enteritis (severe & potentially fatal) results from use of broad-spectrum antibiotics which allows S. aureus to proliferate in the intestines. Magnification: X 12,000 at 35mm size.

The tangle (yellow) lies in the cytoplasm (green) of the cell, and consists of abnormal aggregates of the protein tau. In the healthy cell, tau stabilises microtubules in the cytoplasm. It is not known precisely how the tangles are formed, nor their impact on the neuron's function, but they are seen in a range of neural disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD), some forms of Parkinson's disease, and Supranuclear Palsy.

Kidney stone. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a kidney stone. Kidney stones are usually formed by the precipitation of the mineral salt calcium oxalate from the urine. The resulting hard, round stones (calculi) may cause severe pain, especially as they pass down the urinary tract. Large stones may need to be surgically removed or broken down using ultrasound therapy.

The muscle fibrils, or myofibrils, are crossed by transverse tubules (dark blue lines). These tubules mark the division of the myofibrils into contractile units (sarcomeres). Mitochondrion, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Mitochondria are a type of organelle found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. They oxidise sugars and fats to produce energy in a process called respiration. A mitochondrion has two membranes, a smooth outer membrane and a folded inner membrane. The folds of the inner membrane are called cristae, and it is here that the chemical reactions to produce energy take place. Magnification: x62,800 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.

Influenzavirus B. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of particles of the influenza B virus, which is the cause of influenza (flu) in humans. The virus particles have an enveloped outer coat, or capsid, bearing the proteins (green) haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), which allow the virus to enter and leave host cells. As with all viruses, influenza cannot reproduce by itself, instead entering cells and hijacking their biochemical machinery to produce more copies of the virus. Flu usually causes lethargy, aching muscles, fever and nausea. Influenza B, however, is less virulent than influenza A, due to the limited host range and its slower rate of evolution (by 2 to 3 times).
