A grey heron gracefully glides with its wings outstretched along the seaweed laden river bank.

A Grey Heron sits perfectly still, with its sharp eyesight scanning the waterline for its next meal...

As winter takes its toll on wildlife the estuaries are kept busy with wildlife sheltering from the blustery cold winds and foraging for food... essential fats necessary for keeping warm can be found as 'tasty morsels' hidden within the reeds... This Grey Heron almost looks a tad blue in the light... Who knows, maybe he's cold and the plumage changes its iridescence towards winter..?

This Grey Heron was fishing on Holywell Pond in Northumberland on a bright sunny May morning. He was not successful with this try but certainly made up for it in later attempts and flew away with a full belly!

This Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) was one of five feeding on Holywell Pond, Northumberland and very conveniently took flight after I was ready with my camera.

This beautiful Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) was photographed among the reeds on Queen Elizabeth II Lake, Ashington, Northumberland. These birds are usually very skittish, but this one was fairly co-operative and allowed me to get quite close.

Inspired by the slate blue grey colours and hues that I often see in such a beautiful bird. UK's biggest wading bird, the grey heron, admittedly I often mistakenly speak of as blue heron due to its beautiful blue brilliance and iridescence... With this thinking in mind, I wanted to capture something that emphasised as such and drew upon 'the body architecture' of such a magnificent bird! So for the past few months at least I have been stalking this stork, or rather heron! Keeping very mindful of its biology, behaviour and ecology and trying to in all instances ~ give it the breathing space that it needs... as being respectful of wildlife - is of paramount importance, when wildlife photography and art is concerned. I am sure we have Great Blue Heron and Grey Heron on the shores of Caernarfon and up the estuary... This image was taken at the Glaslyn Wildlife centre whilst on an Osprey lookout... Didn't spot any ospreys close enough to be able to get a decent shot, so I dipped out with my Pentax 560mm f/5.6 dedicated wildlife lens for a spot of river photography and saw this grey heron purely focussed on fishing and getting a prey item!

I just didn't have the heart to ditch this in my virtual trash-bin..! It was a very early morning capture ~ and the light was just creeping up from behind the Caernarfon Castle ~ as this grey heron was first fishing for his breakfast of flatties! I spent about half an hour to an hour of photographing, videoing and just watching him or her struggling to eat and swallow a plaice or some other flatfish..!? Unfortunately because the light was so delicate and soft in this very early hour - the capture wasn't the best quality into the lens from such a distance - and so I have had to work the image hard in post ~ to even create a postcard or greetings card out of it... Any larger and I don't think that it would work! I kept on thinki...

Actually its not all emotional stress for grey herons... far from it... the pairing bonds that they make are often secured by offering not a ring... but a stick... They obviously don't do - materialism!

Decided to add this to portfolio not because of the artistic merit of the work but because its unusual to see a grey heron with a nice plaice in its mouth... Luckily, this one was quite slippy and a bit of a mouthful for this grey heron and so I took time to get this frame as I wanted it using telephoto hybrid lens, so I wasn't expecting miracles and the colour artefacting wasn't good - so I've had to work in post to correct it... but I do like the slight watercolour effect produced... :-)

We often see herring gulls as individual opportunistic scavengers, but in some instances avian interactions do occur between different species and some of the waders in particular the big waders, such as this grey heron here... do give way to a more symbiotic approach to fishing. I have spent hours just watching and observing these interactions in my local area and along the foryd and come to the conclusion that there is some element of altruism at play here... In some instances, what the gull scares into the shadows, the heron picks up on and vica versa... and so it can often be seen that they fish together... This kind of mutual co-operation can be often seen within the animal kingdom... If only humans started to work from t...
