Hull, Modernist Department Store Hoodie

A place known since childhood, the city’s primary department store, decades of memories. The indescribable joy of seeing Father Christmas, neon on lights, and artificial Christmas trees, a world seen through the eyes of a little boy, surrounded by noises, smells and sensations. Tills ringing, loud voices, a food hall redolent of cheese and ham and ground roasting coffee, escalators transporting me to an enchanted world of novelty, and then to the vinegar scented dining room where salty chips and sugary, creamy trifle would be served. I loved that shop, loved it with the intensity of a close and long friendship. It was part of me, part of my childhood.
