Guinea pigs, also known as the cavy or domestic cavy, are not pigs or from Guinea! They come from the Andes of South America. They were originally domesticated as livestock, specifically for food. In the modern day they are more often kept as pets. Guineas are social creatures and are best kept in groups of two or three. In Switzerland keeping one Guinea Pig by itself is considered abuse and actually illegal!
