As early as 1892 New Mexico started referring to itself as ' The Sunshine State '. The first New Mexico license plates issued in 1932 had the nickname stamped along the bottom. Then around 1970, Florida decided " nah, were the sunshine state! ' and that was the end of New Mexico's nickname. Now the state is referred to as ' The Land of Enchantment '.
