Tamara and the Demon, 1889 Konstantin Makovsy This painting was based on a Russian poem titled "The Demon" by Mikhail Lermontov, Konstantin Yegorovich Makovsky was an influential Russian painter, affiliated with the "Peredvizhniki (Wanderers)" The Wanderers formed their own group outside of the Academy of Art and their mission was to bring the art to the people and teach them to appreciate it. They were a traveling group of itenerant artists. Makovsky painted an idealized version of historical Russia which made him quite popular.
