Dore Abbey Dore Abbey (in the 'Golden Valley', Herefordshire, England) was founded in 1147 by Cistercian monks from Morimond, France. Work on the present buildings, which are in the Early English style, commenced in 1175 and the abbey was consecrated in 1280. For the next 250 years, the abbey's main income came from the breeding of sheep for high quality wool, which was sold in Italy. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1537 and the buildings were sold to a gentleman by the name of John Scudamore, who dismantled all the monastic buildings including the nave and roof, and sold the stone.
