The ancient sources give some clues as to who lived in the Mesopotamian marshland and what the landscape looked like in the first millennium. Two terms are used in the written sources to refer to the marshland in southern Babylonia: agammu “marsh, swamp” and appāru “reed marsh, canebrake”. Inanna is an ancient Mesopotamian goddess associated with love, beauty, sex, war, justice and political power. She was originally worshiped in Sumer and was later worshipped by the Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians under the name Ishtar. She was known as the "Queen of Heaven" and was the patron goddess of the Eanna temple at the city of Uruk.

Cuneiform sign for "god". In Sumerian, the language of the inventors of this writing system, the sign is read "dingir" for "god" (and anything divine), or "an" for heaven (see below). In Akkadian - the oldest Semitic language, which adapted this writing system - it can also denote several things: ilum = "god" shamûm ="heaven" Anum = (the god) Anum (=Heaven deified) Originally, the sign depicted a star.
