This photograph was taken at sunrise on the beach in Ocean City, NJ. I was standing under Fishermans Pier as the sun came up silhouetting the pier and casting shadows onto the water as the waves rolled in and out. I used time lapsed photography to create the softness in the motion of the waves.

The North Sea is not always this calm! This image was taken from the beach at Blyth in Northumberland on the North East coast of England just after sunrise on a calm August morning. The sky turning from red to blue is reflected in the calm waters and dog walkers can be spotted doing their morning duty.

A sunny February morning on the beach at Seaton Sluice in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. There is a four mile stretch of sandy beach between the tidal harbour at Seaton Sluice and the mouth of the River Blyth with its piers and lighthouse, this image was shot at the Seaton Sluice end looking north towards Blyth and the beautiful blue sky was reflected perfectly in the standing water of the pools on the only rocky outcrop on the beach.

Huntington Beach was certainly a busy place, even on the Tuesday morning we spent there. Beach volleyballers jumped around in the sand nearby as surfers clad in wetsuits braved the waves on both sides of the pier. I liked standing underneath the pier though, watching the waves crashing towards me as the noise of the world around me died away.

The Shore's surf culture can be traced back to the '60s, when Greg "Grog" Mesanko of Toms River, New Jersey hit the waves at Casino Pier with his crew. He would go on to establish what would become the Shore's premier surf shop, Grog's Surf Palace, in Seaside Park in 1970. Grog's became somewhat of a clubhouse for local surfers and played a huge part in promoting the New Jersey surfing scene, sponsoring many contests and events along the way.

*Boscombe Pier, January 2022* Boscombe Pier has had a somewhat chequered history. Construction began in October 1888, and the pier opened in July 1889, but initially was not very successful. It was taken over by the council in 1904 and buildings were erected at the entrance and on the pier-head. Facilities included a busy steamer landing stage. During World War 2, the pier was breached for defence reasons. In the 1960s, a restaurant and the Mermaid Theatre were built at the pier-head, though the ‘Theatre’ initially opened as a roller-skating rink. By the 1990s, the Mermaid had fallen into disrepair and it was demolished in 2008, replaced by a simpler viewing and fishing platform. I particularly like this view, showin...
