The Ming tombs are a collection of mausoleums built by the Chinese Ming dynasty emperors. The majority of the Ming tombs are located in a cluster near Beijing and collectively known as the Thirteen Tombs of the Ming Dynasty. However, the first Ming emperor's tomb is located near the City of Nanjing. This site is located on the southern slopes of Tianshou Mountain, and was chosen based on the principles of Feng Shui by the third Ming dynasty emperor. After the construction of the Imperial Palace (known today as the Forbidden City) in 1420, the Yongle Emperor selected his burial site and created his own mausoleum. This image shows the inside of one of the guardhouses on top of the mountain. I am standing literally no more than 2 feet away from the metal gate with my back pressed against the wall and a very, very steep descent immediately behind me through a very narrow opening. This image shows a bit more of a close-up to this one section of the wall. I had to take a bit of a break and catch my breath for a few minutes after a couple of kilometers of very steep inclines (ascending and descending). And since the weather was totally crappy (heavy fog and cloud coverage and a bit of a mist in the air), it made more sense to shoot some close-up scenes rather than expansive ones. Here is another picture of the Great Wall. This one shows one the insane set of steps leading to one of the guard posts up on top. Badaling is the highest section of the Jundu mountain and it historically protected the Juyongguan Pass in the mountains. As I mentioned in my previous images of the wall, this portion of the wall was constructed originally in 770 - 476 B.C,, was reconstructed during Ming times, and was renovated in modern times as well. Beihai park, a public park and former imperial garden located in the northwestern part of the Imperial City, Beijing. First built in the 11th century, it is among the largest of all Chinese gardens and contains numerous historically important structures, palaces, and temples.

And another image of the Great Wall at Badaling. I hope this one clearly shows one of the most insane ascents (descents, depending on which direction you come from) and extremely steep set of steps on the this section of the wall. As I had mentioned before, some of these steps were close to two feet tall!!! Just crazy. Extremely testing if you are not particularly fit. In the very short time that I had visiting that day, I only managed to cover about 4 kilometers of this insanity! Hope this image doesn't scare from visiting Badaling! The Great Wall of China was built as an ancient Chinese defence project in order to protect China from its enemies. This section of the wall at Badaling was built to protect Beijing City on the north side. Badaling is the site of the most visited section of the Great Wall. It is situated approximately 50 miles (80 km) northwest of the city of Beijing in Yanqing County. This portion of the wall was built back in 1504 during the Ming Dynasty, along with a military outpost reflecting the location's strategic importance. The highest point of Badaling is approximately 1,015 metres (3,330 ft) above sea level. This is another image showing the Great Wall at Badaling. The day I visited the wall the weather was so crappy it wasn't even funny. A combination of heavy fog, rain on and off, low clouds, and visibility at certain times was no more than 50 meters ahead. Almost 90 percent of the pictures that I took were totally unusable. The only barely useable ones were the ones with close-ups (hence not much of a background showing the expansive mountains or trees, etc.). Oh well.
