Okay, so because of the distance and the technology used and low light due to light fading near dusk this shot is not the most crystal clear ~ but I've never seen a Cormorant in an Oak tree before..!!! I'm quite lucky to live so nearby to such beautiful fishing birds and in the evening from my living room window - I watch as they come into roost after a hard days fishing out at sea. My eye with binoculars has become used to bird spotting over time and my ear is getting better out in the field in being able to pick up and distinguish some calls. I decided to get out and photograph using a basic set up telephoto. Oakey Cokey Cormorant :)

Cormorant Bird

These birds are commonly seen in the pose that I have drawn here, with their huge wings spread out to show off their beautiful feathers and soak up the sun. This particular bird is drawn from a photograph I took at a local park. Drawn by hand in ink using a stippling or dot work technique.

This cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) was resting at the edge of the Queen Elizabeth II Lake in Ashington, Northumberland, enjoying the weak February sunshine and showing off its plumage.

The Double-crested Cormorant is found near rivers, lakes and along the coastline. It mainly eats fish and hunts by swimming and diving. Its feathers, like those of all cormorants, are not waterproof and it must spend time drying them out after spending time in the water. Once threatened by use of DDT, the numbers of this bird have increased markedly in recent years. Although they call it Puffin Island off the coast of Pen Mon Anglesey - it does seem to me to be much more inhabited by Cormorants than puffins... Here's one in flight coming back onto the Island after a fishing spree, no doubt bringing back food to their hungry chicks...

Juvenile Cormorant Profile by Debra Martz Sometimes birds will cooperate and stay in an area long enough for you to get several shots...this was one of those times. An adult cormorant would be much darker all over. There are similarities in the Neotropic and Double-crested and sometimes hard to distinguish. But because of the more acute angle at the gape and not having dark lores I determined this to be a Neotropic. It would be much easier if they were side by side because of size...the Neotropic is a bit smaller. They dive underwater to fish and this one came back with a little twig of seagrass. They are a resident of SE Texas and further into Mexico and Central America.
