A strong heat begins to dissipate over the French city. Shadows lengthen now, dust settles, tempers calm. The air is infused with lavender soap, with the scent of roasting chicken, cold beer, red wine, rosemary and thyme. It is pleasant to wander alone, to explore, to own. Flowers grow, shutters creak, and the maze of streets invites us inwards.

Saint Michael, the Archangel, On the corner niches of many buildings in Valletta are to be found sculptures, mainly Christian in nature, and often near or on church buildings. The tradition of setting up niches in streets dates back to the Roman era. In Christian times, images of Christ, Our Lady and Christian Saints, replaced those of Roman Gods. These niches were often decorated and lit, thus paying homage to the image within, as well as providing some illumination during the night. Canon 6D, zoom lens.

I love London’s mews. Little corners of peace, cobbles that still ring to ghostly hooves. Here London belongs to me once more. The shadows keep patches of cool shade, and mysterious windows look down on me. I imagine how wonderful it would be to live here, to tend a little urban garden of potted plants and fragrant wisteria. I am drawn to the bricks, to the scorched soot-drenched terracotta that evokes a London of yore, of belching sulphurous smoke and a whiff of the once imperial capital, that city of dreadful delight. Each brick holds a story. The work is rich in colour and in detail. It makes a wonderful gift, a perfect souvenir of London, and a great addition to any collection of urban-themed works.

I am old enough to remember the Grassmarket as dark, insalubrious, filled with the ghostly magic of times past. It is different now, lighter, brighter, cleaner. Where smoky pubs once stood, figures nebulous behind frosted glass, there are a plethora of smart cafés and bars, throngs of visitors and the clinking of wine glasses. Still, it is a place of great historical significance, a feeling of wonder as we look up at the castle, erstwhile fortress, dungeon and palace all at once. From all angles history infuses the air, with the spirit of bodysnatchers, Covenanters, witchery and the hangman’s rope. The work is full of colour, of summer heat, and is a wonderful souvenir of Edinburgh, a lovely gift for a home.

A familiar corner of London, of Soho. A place of loud voices and clinking glasses, a vibe of pure energy, of socialising and Bacchanalian pleasure, of joy and youth. Beer, wine, crisps, a whiff of nicotine. It is late afternoon, on Friday, and the weekend stretches with its promise of brunches and candlelit dinners, of walks by the Thames and picnics in parks. I know the area so well. It is embedded in my psyche. This work depicts a corner pub, rich in detail, in light and shadow.

Edinburgh on a beautiful day of summer, a day filled with glorious Scottish sun, when the stone absorbs light and the city lives up to its unofficial title of Athens of the North. I walk alone, along streets, and crescent, and through squares, familiar and unchanged since childhood, inhaling the city’s scent. It is fresh, filled with flowers and with the thick, malty smell of distant breweries. It feels timeless, Eden-like, dreach wet days of fog, sleet and rain forgotten and forgiven. I want time to stand still, for the day of sun and light to never end. The crescent sweeps round, creating an illusion of infinity. The work is rich in light and colour, with satisfying detail. An Italian house in summer, a villa of one’s dreams, seeped with cleansing lights, its stone warm to the touch; a house hidden and shrouded with mystery within the embrace of its walls. The garden adds coolness, a veil of delicious greenery infusing the grounds with the citric scent of lemon, and with the sweetness of oleander, honeysuckle and rose. It is indeed the house of one’s dreams, a moment or two of pure joy, the contemplation of promise, that the Italian summer will return again soon. Beyond London stretches outwards, and I make ready to move on, into Bloomsbury or up to Kings Cross. But for this moment I inhale once more the scent of the full English. A lovely gift from London, a fantastic souvenir, rich in detail, in colour and in atmosphere.
