B-cells mature in bone marrow and are responsible for humoural immunity; they operate by recognising a specific site on the surface of a pathogen or foreign object (antigen), which they then bind to before producing antibodies to destroy that antigen. MRSA is a gram-positive, round (coccus) bacterium that is resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics. It is carried by around a third of the population without causing any symptoms. However, in vulnerable people, such as those that have recently had surgery, it can cause severe illness due to its high resistance to antibiotics. It can result in wound infections, pneumonia and blood poisoning.

The virus particles have an enveloped outer coat, or capsid, bearing the proteins (green) haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), which allow the virus to enter and leave host cells. As with all viruses, influenza cannot reproduce by itself, instead entering cells and hijacking their biochemical machinery to produce more copies of the virus. Flu usually causes lethargy, aching muscles, fever and nausea. Influenza B, however, is less virulent than influenza A, due to the limited host range and its slower rate of evolution (by 2 to 3 times).
