Hacienda Heights is an unincorporated suburban community in the San Gabriel Valley. It is home to a large Taiwanese population and is home to the biggest Buddhist temple in the Western Hemisphere. Downey is a post-World War II suburb in the Southeast Los Angeles region. It's the birthplace of Denny's and home to the oldest McDonald's in operation. I drew this map around 2010.

Highland Park is a neighborhood in Northeast Los Angeles. It was, along with Sycamore Grove, one of the first two communities to be annexed by Los Angeles, in 1895. In 1927, part of Annandale, Garvanza, Hermon, and York Valley (formerly New York Valley) joined together in an alliance as "Greater Highland Park." Northwest County -- or sometimes, "Northwest Los Angeles," is a region of Los Angeles County. Although sparsely populated, it's home to the county's third-most populous city, Santa Clarita. Hancock Park is a neighborhood in Los Angeles's Midtown region. Although primarily composed of single-family homes, Rossmore Avenue is home to a charming section of older, mid-rise apartment buildings. Covine is a suburban city in Los Angeles County's San Gabriel Valley. I drew this map around 2010 -- but have still yet to explore the community for my series, "California Fool's Gold." Once I do, I'll probably make additions to this version.

Glendale is the third-most populous city in Los Angeles County. Much of the city is dominated by the Verdugo Mountains, which bisect, dividing the main section of the city in the south from the communities in the Crescenta Valley to the north. Lincoln Heights is a neighborhood in Los Angeles's Eastside. It was once home to a large Italian population which spilled over from Little Italy (now Chinatown). Vestiges include San Antonio Winery and Lanza Brothers' Deli. The legends The Stone Roses

The Pomona Valley is a valley to the east of the San Gabriel Valley that extends from easternmost Los Angeles County into the Inland Empire. It's also used to describe the region of Los Angeles County that includes Pomona, Claremont, and La Verne. I wrote a primer and made this map for my series, "California Fool's Gold," in 2011.

South Pasadena is a small suburban city located, naturally, to the south of Pasadena. It, however improbably, retains and exudes a rather small-town feel which leads to its often portraying small towns in the Midwest on television and in film. Hillside Village is a small, mostly residential community in Los Angeles's Eastside. It's located on the site of a former race track and home to the excellent King Torta. East Pasadena is a small, unincorporated community to the east of Pasadena -- which is slowly nibbling away at its edges. Rowland Heights is a suburb in the east San Gabriel Valley. Home to a large Taiwanese population, it's sometimes referred to as "Little Taipei" -- a nickname formerly applied to the suburb of Monterey Park, although that city is now home to more Hong Kongers and mainland Chinese. Gardena is a suburb generally characterized as being part of the South Bay -- although it's not actually located along the short of the Santa Monica Bay and is further separated from the region by the 405. At its core is a charming, Spanish Colonial Revival planned community that would be walkable were there more sidewalks -- which were intentionally left out in areas in order to help keep out riff-raff like me. Los Feliz is a neighborhood in Mideast Los Angeles (MELA). It's named after the Feliz (also spelled Felix and Felis) family who ranched there decades ago. Pyrite Plaid

The Antelope Valley is a vast region of Los Angeles County. Within it are two of the county's most populous cities -- Lancaster and Palmdale -- and yet I'd wager its rarely on the mind of Angelenos on the other side of the mountains. San Gabriel is a suburban city in the San Gabriel Valley. The majority of its populace are foreign-born -- mostly in Vietnam and China -- lead to it's affectionately being nicknamed "Chan Gabriel." Its official name is derived from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, a Spanish mission built in 1776. The Fairfax District is a neighborhood in Los Angeles's Midtown region. It has long been a center of Jewish Angeleno culture although today Fairfax Avenue hosts an odd mixture of established Jewish businesses and newer streetwear boutiques. El Monte is a suburban city located in the middle of the San Gabriel Valley. It's something of a transit hub, with that valley's only private airport and the largest bus station in the west. El Sereno is a neighborhood in Los Angeles's Eastside. I chose the Papyrus font -- which I will never do again because I loathe it -- because it fits with the name, "El Sereno" for several reasons. For one, it's the font used on Joss Whedon's "Serenity."
