Cell division. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of a human epithelial cell (centre) during the late anaphase stage of mitosis. Mitosis is the cycle of replication and division by which new body cells are formed. Here the chromosomes (blue) of the parent cell have duplicated and the pairs are being pulled apart by microtubules (spindles, green) to opposite poles of the cell, in a process called cytokinesis. When the cell has split, two identical daughter cells are formed.

Small intestine lining. Light micrograph of a section through villi (finger-like projections) in the healthy mucosal lining of the jejunum, the middle section of the small intestine. Villi are projections that increase the surface area for the absorption of food.

Brain scans. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans through a human head showing a healthy brain. The bottom row (and one at lower right) are axial sections with the front of the head at top. The others are sagittal sections with the front at left. The largest part of the brain is the folded cerebrum, which controls conscious thoughts. The highly-folded cerebellum, which controls balance and posture, is seen at lower right in the sagittal scans. Eyes (white circles) are seen in some of the scans at lower right. MRI uses radio waves and a powerful magnet to provoke tissues to emit signals depending on their composition. It is particularly useful for studying nervous tissue.

Rod cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a group of rod cells (blue/purple) in the retina of the eye. Rod cells are light sensitive cells which respond to dim light, and are mainly used for dark adapted vision. They cannot detect colours, which is why vision in low light conditions is limited to shades of grey. Colours are detected by cone cells (not seen). When light falls on the tip of a rod cell, a chemical reaction sends an electrical impulse to the optic nerve (not shown), which relays it to the visual cortex of the brain. Magnification unknown.

Kidney glomeruli, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The cells that usually surround the glomeruli have been removed to reveal the coiled capillaries at the core of the glomeruli and the blood vessels that serve them. The function of the glomeruli is to filter waste products from the blood. After the reabsorption of certain substances elsewhere in the kidney, the liquid is transported to the bladder as urine. Magnification: x80 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.

Eye pigment cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a melanocyte cell with granules of pigment in the light-sensitive retina of the eye. The surface of this melanocyte cell (filling most of frame) has been removed revealing granules of melanin pigment (blue). Covering the cell are numerous finger-like processes called microvilli (purple). This melanocyte forms part of the pigmented epithelium, the outermost cell layer of the retina, beyond which is the highly pigmented choroid. The melanin pigment of this cell absorbs light rays passing through the retina. This prevents interference due to light reflection, assisting with vision. Magnification: unknown.

Purkinje cells in the cerebellum. Fluorescent light micrograph of Purkinje cells (green) in the cerebellum of the brain. Purkinje nerve cells have a flask-like body from which numerous highly branched dendrites extend. They are found in the grey matter (cortex) of the cerebellum, at the boundary between the granular layer (blue red) and the molecular layer (red green). The dendrites relay signals to the cell body, which passes them on through its single axon (green) in the granular layer. The cerebellum is a structure at the base of the brain that plays an important role in motor control, sensory perception and learning. Magnification: x380 when printed 10cm wide.
