The splendid fortress of Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, Italy, was originally built as a Mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian in 139 AD. In the 10th century AD it was transformed into a castle, then, 500 years later, into the elegant residence of Pope Alexander VI Borgia. Michelangelo designed the marvellous main court for Pope Leon X and many of the rooms inside are decorated with frescoes of great beauty. It's also been used to house prisoners, including the sculptor Benvenuto Cellini. The terrace offers a fine view of the river Tiber and opera lovers will know that this was where the final act of Puccini's opera "Tosca" took place. Haji Ali Dargah is one of the most popular religious places in Mumbai, visited by people of all religions alike. It is one of India’s most famous and prestigious landmarks situated about 500 yards from the Mumbai shoreline in the middle of the Arabian Sea off Lala Lajpatrai Marg. The structure was erected on a set of high rising rocks and was given its present day shape in the early 19th century after the Trust was legally formed as an entity in 1916. Haji Ali Dargah is the complex housing the tomb of the Muslim Saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari (R.A.). Along with the tomb, there is also a Masjid at Haji Ali.

Itmad-ud-daulah has a special place in the chronicles of both history as well as architecture. This is precisely because Itmad ud Daulah is the very first tomb in India that is entirely made out of Marble. This is actually a mausoleum that overlooks the River Yamuna and is a tomb of Mir Ghiyas Beg, a minister in the court of Shah Jahan.. This is often called The Baby Taj and is an easy visit from Taj area of Agra. You can also take in some other nearby sites.

Bibi ka Maqbara is believed to have been built between 1651 and 1661 C.E. An inscription found on the main entrance door mentions that this mausoleum was designed and erected by Ata-ullah, an architect and Hanspat Rai, an engineer respectively. The marble for this mausoleum was brought from mines near Jaipur. According to Tavernier, around three hundred carts laden with marble, drawn by at least 12 oxen, were seen by him. The mausoleum was intended to rival the Taj Mahal, but the decline in architecture and proportions of the structure (both due to the severe budgetary constraints imposed by Aurangzeb) had resulted in a poor copy of the latter, but well worth a visit.

On the eastern bank of the Yamuna River, the mausoleum is set in a large garden criss-crossed by water courses and walkways. The walls are made up from white marble from Rajasthan encrusted with semi-precious stone decorations – cornelian, jasper, lapis lazuli, onyx, and topaz formed into images of cypress trees and wine bottles, or more elaborate decorations like cut fruit or vases containing bouquets. Light penetrates to the interior through delicate jālī screens of intricately carved white marble. The interior decoration is considered by many to have inspired that of the Taj Mahal. Many of Nūr Jahān's relatives are interred in the mausoleum. This is often called The Baby Taj.

This photo was taken in one of my favorite places in the world - Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA. The patina on the mausoleum door was stunning, and showed the years the door had withstood the elements.
